I have a 1979 5hp Mariner outboard. It shifts smoothly into forward gear but grinds and goes in hard for reverse (but works). You can feel it resisting even when the motor isn't running. How can I fix it? Bob. Thanks.

Hi Bob, Sounds like you have a major problem in your lower unit,as in clutch dog and gear damage.Don't use it til you tear it down and correct it or you may be looking for a complete foot. The only other thing I can say is maybe check the neutral throttle stop that stops you from over-revving in neutral; you would probably be able to see it binding under the cover near the shift lever. Otherwise go get a manual and a couple special tools and spend some quality time with your gearcase. Shalom,W.W.W.

WWW8,
Hello again,
Well we got the shifter faceplate off and there is a bolt with a lockwasher in it right in front. It doesn't look like it is adjustable, so I thought I would ask you about it first.
Thank you. Bob A.

I'm not sere I understand what you mean but it sounds like you should inspect gears etc. in the foot.

WWW8,
This grinding noise (while running)comes from the gear shift body area, not from down below at the gear case area. When the motor isn't running the gear shift goes smoothly into forward gear but not into reverse.
I thought you meant to take the cover off of the shift body and adjust a linkage in there. There is a bolt with a lock washer that doesn't look adjustable.
The motor is only supposed to have 15 hours on it.
Thats where I am at right now. Thanks. Bob.
