I have a Force 125 outboard which has gotten very stiff in steering. Even with the steering wheel disconnected, it is hard to pivot the engine. Is this a bushing problem? Can I replace the steering bushings myself? Do I need special tools or techniques? The manual I have does not cover this topic.

Unfortunately, this problem has nothing to do with the outboard. It is a perfectly normal part of the aging process of a boat. The steering cables get corroded inside and become hard to move. The cables are made in such a way that it is not possible to lubricate them thoroughly, so the only remedy is to replace them. To demonstrate this to yourself, disconnect the steering cables at the outboard. Then the engine will turn freely. Most of the manufacturers are now offering hydraulic steering cables. These cables use fluid rather than cables to turn the engine and require very little maintenance.
