My Bimini top leaks, is there anything I can do to stop it?

Hi andyreds,
Your Bimini Top could be leaking for a number of reasons. The first possibility could be that it was sewn with a needle that was too big. This would leave large holes at the seams through which water would drip. The second possibility is that your Top was sewn with the wrong thread. The correct thread would have "wicking" qualities which would cause the thread to swell when wet blocking the stitch holes. If on the other hand your Bimini Top is more than five years old it could be leaking because it has lost its water repellency. New canvas is impregnated with water repellent which is lost through aging. These problems can be fixed by applying a new coat of water repellent which you can get, in a spray form, at a marine supply store.
