where did all the terrorism start in afganastan and pakastain?
jplaxe gave this response on 5/11/2000:
That's difficult to say, as I'm not an expert on that part of the world. I will make a few points, however.
First, much of the conflict in the world today is often the result of many years of ethnic or religious conflict. This is the case today in Pakistan, where some violent Islamic extremists (who represent a minority within the Muslim world) want to establish a government based on sharia, or Islamic law.
Second, Afghanistan was at war for many years. The conflict was between the Soviet Union and the mujaheddin, Muslim freedom fighters who were supported by the CIA and others. Once the Soviets were forced to withdraw for Afghanistan, these well-trained mujaheddin focused their energy elsewhere. Some now are members of terrorist groups that are virulently anti-US.
Hope this helps.
