Should drugs be leaglized?
Detective gave this response on 5/7/2000:
Not in my opinion because the use of drugs is like other addictions which lead to a host of other problems. I have seen drugs ruin the lives of hundreds of people and it is basically stupid and senseless!
Take care.

If you took the profit out of it organized crime would quit. People would not have to steal to support their habit. And the people that are stupid enough to use would soon self destruct. There would be room in the jails for real crimnals. How many lives are affected by one drugge in the form of lost property additional taxes to keep them in jail. The children born and unborn women that turn to prostitution to support a habit i can make one hell of a case for making drugs free to any one dumb enough to take them. And last of all law inforcment hasn't made a dent in the problem in the last 50 years.
Detective gave this response on 5/7/2000:
I agree with you there are many issues that could easily support a justification for the legalization of drugs. They could produce tremendous revenue through taxation, limit some of the power and influence of the mafia/gangs/Cartels, and reduce the excessive burdens on our criminal justice system. However, it still does not address the "heart" of the matter. Look at cigarettes and alcohol. They are responsible for a majority of deaths in this country. If all forms of drug use would be legalized, I think the incidents of traffic deaths and related health problems would rise significantly causing greater social damage. Also there is a strong "moral" reason not to legalize drugs and until a majority of U.S. citizens are willing to support this position overwhelmingly, the laws will stay basically the same. Some jurisdictions have "decriminalized" marijuana and I would assume that trend will expand somewhat but hopefully never to include the more dangerous drugs, ever!
Take care.

You mention alcohol compare the present with the prohibition era and the present looks better to me. Holding people responsible for their actions. like jail for those who break the law. With enough room to heep them in should solve the abuse problem I agree that is not going to happen as long as prominent people are proffiting from the drug trade on many levels.
