What actually happened at the 1996 Olympics when the terrorist bombed the park?

Hello and thanks for your question. In the Olympic Park bombing, the bomb was placed in a backpack, which was left in the park during the festivities. Interestingly, I happened to be in Atlanta for the Olympics and watched the response to the event on television.
This location was chosen over others because it was one of the public venues with virtually no security.
Originally the first speculations were that Richard Jewell, a security guard, planted the bomb. However, this was disproven and now the focus is on Eric Rudolph, a right-wing extremist, who remains a fugitive.
