Basically the easiest thing to do is start contacting several of the Private Investigations firms near you and see if they could use assistance, even part-time at first. Your local telephone yellow pages is a good place to start.
There really is no better way to become a Private Investigator than to work for someone for a few years, gain the experience, and then become licensed yourself. This web site will give you links to the various State licensing requirements. Check yours and have a goal to work towards if they require a qualification test, years of actual experience, etc.

Also, you can explore these two web sites to find Private Investigators near you:

Be persistent and use whatever skills you already have to "sell" yourself to the prospective Investigation agency. They may need help with surveillance, court records checks, whatever. Offer to start at anything they could use help on. Learn by doing! Purchase and read several books and manuals on the subject as even the most experienced person can always learn something new.
Hope this helps and good luck!
