Yet another damned mailing list but there was a specific
need for such a mailing list not too long ago:
When Phil Scott was hauled off by the cops and run
through a forced evaluation by the City, he disapeared
abruptly and there was some concern. There was
difficulty getting information _out_ of the facility that he
was taken to until many concerned people called in to
ask about his health and safety and what had happened.
What's needed is a network of individuals across the
United States, across Canada, and wherever there are
critics that are Fair Game (picketers take note) that
can be alerted about such events quickly so that critics
in the effected area can launch up to provide whatever
help and assistance (as well as MORAL SUPPORT!)
Let's start the High Alert mailing list hosted by The
Skeptic Tank (I have 100 empty mailing lists doing
nothing right now.) Every 2 weeks the subscribers to
the mailing list would receive a message listing who
the other subscribers are. Other than that there would
be no other traffic in the mailing list unless something
happens.
If a picketer gets beaten up by a cultist in San Diego,
for example, people in Southern California would
see the alert and get on the phone to the hospital and
the police to make sure that the person is okay, to
provide moral support, and to make sure that the
cops get background on Scientology's history of such
behavior -- with an eye toward making sure the cops
understand the media that's heading their way as
well as the cult's lawyers and spin doctors that'll try
to "handle" the "PR flap." If that were to happen, I
would probably drive to San Diego myself to meet
with the victim and to yell loudly for the punishment
of the perp. in person.
There's often very little lag time between an event
that's of some magnatude, and information -- however
spotty -- getting posted to a.r.s... But not everyone
reads a.r.s every day or has time to review a.r.s's
headers for the latest important information. This would
be for extremely urgent High Alerts only.
News media would be encouraged to subscribe. The
Lisa McPherson Trust should have at least one
representative subscribed. Every geographical area
should probably have at least one critic subscribed.
Everyone should subscribe, in fact.
If someone disappears like that in the future, let's have
a well-populationed network in place that can get
alerted quickly. A phone call from any critic in trouble
to someone in the network would alert everyone.
