A lady in my writing class caught me as I was leaving yesterday, to tell me she'd had a brush with Scientology back in St. Louis.
A single mother, she responded to the 'HELP WANTED' sign outside the org. Since she ran a day care center out of her home, they conned her into caring for their children in exchange for processing.
She said that state law prevents a caregiver from undressing or bathing children, but some of the kids were so nasty, she had to hose 'em down and wash their clothes. One girl was without diapers, she would just squat and piddle on her hardwood floors! Mind you, she told me, these were the children of Scientology Ministers! She seemed astounded that these people would allow their children to exist in such a condition of filth.
Of course, when she had to have childcare so she could take her "free" courses, the bastards charged her for it!
I've asked her to write it up in detail. It is, after all, a writing
class. I'll forward it to Mike Gormez for his pages. Stay tuned.

"Imagine a church so dangerous, you must sign a release form before you can receive its "spiritual assistance." This assistance might involve holding you against your will for an indefinite period, isolating you from friends and family, and denying you access to appropriate medical care. You will of course be billed for this treatment - assuming you survive it. If not, the release form absolves your caretakers of all responsibility for your suffering and death.
Welcome to the Church of Scientology."

Sorta reminds me of an incident in LA back in the 1970s. A Scientology
nanny took several kids of Sea Orgers to the Park -- MacArthur Park, as
I recall, which was pretty unsavory -- and just walked off and left
them. The cops were called, and a SO guy at ASHO named Richard Deere
had to fend off the "flap" to keep it out of the newspapers. He was
pretty weird himself, but I think he managed to squelch it.

Richard Deere was the Assistant Guardian at the American Saint Hill Organization (ASHO). I've written quite a bit about him. See this URL: http://tinyurl.com/7rqbc

In l976 we went to visit a young man who with his wife and children left the cult. He told of his wife going in one morning to look at their baby who was cared for by the cult teens. She had not been bathed, diaper was dirty and she had sores on her little face. She went to him and said "We have to get out of here". They packed and left that day. He told how when they would get a warning that the health dept was going to check on them, they would quickly shove the dirty mattresses in a closet, clean up the room, leave a couple of youngsters there and then have the rest taken to the park til they got an all clear signal.
This couple were constantly harassed and they finally left the area, changed their name and hopefully they got away from the cult .
