Since it is under heavy gag orders I don't have much to report, but the Ashlee Shaner wrongful death lawsuit settled April 12, 2002, though there is some remaining hearing in about a week. The case was settled in record time, under a year.
People who are in the know on suits of this kind tell me it would have gone into the hundred million level if it had gone to a jury. The cult's "depraved indifference" to human lives (just old thetans in new bodies) and the facts of the gruesome decapitation death of a 16 year old girl in her mother's view (spraying her younger sister with blood) plus the known deep pockets of the cult made it a prime case for a record settlement. The fact it happened on Wed before the 2 PM Thur. stat push would have figured into the case had it gone to trial.
How much the case settled for is unknown, but it has to be over ten million.
Related, Thomas Nove of Moreno Valley, the guy who was driving the front loader, pled no contest and was sentenced to a year in jail. I suspect this came at the insistence of the cult and as part of the settlement. Coincidentally, he got the same jail time I got for protesting the cult's involvement in the deaths of Ashlee Shaner and Stacy Moxon Meyers.
There *are* things going on in other places besides Clearwater.
