Good point Dan. I would also recommend using WIS for debating the
issue of the actual size and expansion of the Church of Scientology.
Let's look at page 453 in the 1998 softcover edition:
"Auditing hours, Ministered in Churches and Missions"
1968-1977: 2,810,568
1978-1987: 7,436,371
1988-1997: 11,074,235
Let's focus on the last ten years.
An average of 1,107,424 hours per year.
So how many hours of auditing does the average scientologist get in a
year? Not very easy to say, as some members will not get any at all,
while others will get hundreds of hours. But still: auditing is
absolutely necessary in order to progress up the Bridge. From p. 82 of
WIS: "only auditing provides a precise path by which any individual
may walk an exact route to higher states of spiritual awareness."
From p. 550 of WIS:
"How many hours of auditing a day can one participate in?
(...) An average probably is around 2 1/2 hours a day for the five
weekdays. Auditing is best done intensively, at least 12 1/2 hours a
week (...) Of course, one is not always receiving auditing so when one
is, his best chance of making rapid progress is intensively."
From p. 552 of WIS:
"How long does it take to go Clear?
It varies from person to person, but it takes an average of anywhere
from one year to two years to go from the bottom of the Grade Chart
through Clear, depending on how much time one spends each week on his
auditing."
Let's be generous and use the average figures of two years to Clear.
Number of auditing hours to Clear will vary between individuals. But
let's use some figures given on pp.671-673 as guidelines. Since
estimates for some auditing levels are missing in the 1998 edition, we
will also use the WIS 1993 soft cover edition, pp.520-521.
Objectives auditing: 25 hrs
Scn Drug RD (optional): 12.5 hrs
Expanded Grades, ARC SW - Grade IV: 150 hrs
New Era Dianetics: 100 hrs
There are 26 optional auditing rundowns listed, that may or may not be
done, depending on individual needs. But let's be generous in our
estimate and not count anything but the basic route to Clear. Let's
even ignore the Scn Drug RD, since not everyone does it.
Total auditing hours to Clear: 350 hrs
Average number of auditing hours per year for person going Clear:
350 hrs/2 year = 175 hrs per year
Let's be very generous once more, and say that the figure quoted above
for number of auditing hours ministered, 1,107,424 hours per year,
does not include any other auditing than essential Grade Chart actions
for persons going Clear (disregarding all auditing of OTs, repair
auditing, special rundowns etc.)
Number of people auditing towards Clear per year:
1,107,424 hrs / 175 hrs per person = 6,328 persons
At this rate, how long will it take to Clear the planet? I'll leave
that calculation up to you, Dan.

There is.
