Hi Kristi - you'll perhaps remember an exchange we had quite a while ago about Australian stats, in which I told you I had a database of 3500+ completions and undertook to email details to you. Thereby hangs a tale of globetrotting laptops, an incompetent munging of the database, and (Eureka!) the discovery last weekend of a long-forgotten backup floppy. Sorry about the delay (Hi, Cerridwen ;->).
A few notes to guide the reader -
The sources for these figures are local org newsletters: for Sydney, 'The Bridge' and for Melbourne, 'Communication', except for January 1977, which come from the Sydney Sea Org newsletter 'FOLO ANZO Newsletter', and 1998 which are from ANZO 'Advance' covering basically the western Pacific rim. Up to 1998, I've divided completions by city, but 'Advance' doesn't publish where individuals have done their courses, which effectively disguises for their Australian readers how pathetic the figures are - for example, in April 1998, of 5 chumps doing 'Grade I', three are Japanese.
The mags, especially in the early years are, to say the least, erratic about issue numbering and dating. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't. Where no date appeared on the newsletters themselves, I've gone by the date of receipt at the repository where they're held - that is, using that date as a base to extrapolate backwards, looking for clues within the mags, and comparing names/courses already in the database.
I realise that the courses (at least later on) are meant to be arranged in an hierarchical manner representing the steps 'up the bridge', split between 'service' and 'technical' strands, and that each strand is supposed to be reported in either a 'minor' or 'major' issue of the appropriate mag. However, the producers appear not to have been consistent about this, and to save myself a lot of sweat, I've simply arranged entries alphabetically by course title.
Which brings up another set of issues about consistency. Course titles may vary from city to city, and within each mag, from issue to issue.
For example, the Sydney mag is usually pretty consistent about spelling out ' Hubbard Standard Dianetics Course', while the Melbourne mag heads their completions as 'HSDC' - which, while I'm fairly sure means the same, I can't be certain, so it appears here exactly as in the mag. I've taken the same approach with all other such anomalies - 'Dianetic' and 'Dianetics' both appear, for example. If you've got any complaints, take it up with the nice people at OSA.
Despite the fact that the chronological sequence is very spotty, there are some pretty interesting things to be gleaned - for example the spike in PTS/SP courses in Sydney in April 1978, and sudden enormous spike in 'The State of Clear' courses in late 1978-early 1979. Or the minuscule numbers doing 'Student Hat'. Or the fact that of 20 people doing the 'Hubbard Apprentice Scientologist' course in April 1978, only 5 can be found subsequently. A retention rate of......oh, this MEST arithmetic .....25%. Some of these interesting nuggets will be artefacts of an incomplete data set. I hope to fill in at least some of the gaps as I visit various libraries and archives in my travels.
