Yesterday, I drove up to Los Angeles to give a talk on Scientology to the Humanist Society. I met up with Tory at the Senior Center, where the talk was to be held in time to set out my handouts.
I had several items to hand out; an org chart, Robert Lifton's excellent essay on coercive groups, and a suggested reading list of URLs and books. Included were: xenu.net ronthewarhero.org xenu-city.net stop-narconon.org narconon-exposed.org
I also brought along my Mark V, to demonstrate how it's used to hook people in by "seeing a thought." Tory helped me with that, cuz I have no idea how an emeter is supposed to be operated.
There were 13 people at the meeting. I started off with a brief introduction to the development of Dianetics and Astounding Science Fiction, and on to Scientology's beginning in Camden, New Jersey.
I then began to address the corporate structure, going by the chart. CST, RTC, chairman of the board. Operation Snow White. The demise of CSC and the Wollersheim decision. People were constantly asking good questions, which either Tory or I fielded. We actually covered much more material than my outline had, as the group had some knowlege of Scientology. One woman had taken some courses, and kept arguing with us about our assertion that the cult is stone evil. Between us, I think we made her realize that she'd been buying into the Scientology PR machine.
For example, she asked, "Why do you think getting people off drugs is a bad thing?" I explained about Narconon's inflated success rates, and how they arrived at that statistic by conveniently discarding the people who failed to complete the program. People who quit without help have a 10% success rate. Narconon has a 2% success rate, and over half of those who complete the program become Scientologists.
That is NOT a Good Thing!
We emphasized that the ABLE programs are intended to get good PR, recruit, and acquire funding from outside agencies. I explained how "Based on the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard" is an attempt to distance these "secular" groups from Scientology, while still infecting people with Hubbard's idiocy.
At one point, I was explaining how the OCA is used to "find your ruin." I related how several Scientologists at pickets stated that "Scientology saved my life," and, when asked how, said, "I took the personality test and they told me I'd commit suicide in five/three years if I didn't start courses now!" I've also heard this from wogs who didn't fall for it. Tory said that, when I was relating this, the woman who'd been defending Scn's face got a peculiar expression on it. It's likely that she was told this same line at some point. If so, she probably has a glimmer of a clue that she's been hoodwinked by glossy PR, rather than reality. If she looks at the websites I recommended, she will probably change her mind about the social benefits Scientology has to offer.
We were originally scheduled to speak for 45 minutes. We wound up talking for 2 hours! People were very interested, and asked a lot of good questions. In fact, they kept ignoring the moderator when he repeatedly tried to take a break.
We were finally forced to wrap it up, as we'd used up our time for the room. We covered a lot of ground in the time we had, and gave them a good background knowlege for continued research.
This is true,

That is indeed a humility-worthy opinion. Beyond ignoring that Tory, who=20 was also present *does* know how to operate an e-meter, barb is an=20 *excellent* source of information about Scientology=AE, especially for=20 this audience.
The only people interested in the *inner* workings of the 'philosophy'=20 are the vanishingly small number of potential 'raw meat' recruits.=20 Vanishingly small because even minimal exposure of Scientology Reality=20 has proven to be almost 100% effective in causing 'potential' Raw Meat=20 to become 'not on your life Jack' non-recruits.
So, in this case, in dealing with 'wogs' whose experience with=20 Scientology will almost certainly be with the PR Arm of the 'Church',=20 barb is an expert. Far more in fact than most 'public' Scientologists,=20 who for the most part are spared Scientology's OSA 'social face'.
Now mind you, Scientology scripture does indeed mandate Scientology's=20 odious relations with the 'wog world', but no wog actually needs=20 Scientology Training to completely comprehend Scientology's position in=20 society.

Heh heh...you think it's important to know how to operate a stupid
Wheatsone Bridge in order to inform people that Scientology is a scam
wrapped in a fraud with a light sprinkling of religion on top?
I presume that the "and such" you mention is your feeble reference to the scams Scientology defrauds people with, and the criminal behavior such as Operation Snow White, the attempted frame-up of ex-Clearwater mayor Gabe Cazares, the terrorizing of Paulette Cooper and the numerous untimely deaths of betrayed believers who trusted Hubbard when he claimed that Scientology processing could cure their cancer, arthritis, epilepsy and mental dysfunction. How dismissive of you!
Perhaps I should have focussed on the numerous and anonymous, vague testimonials of true believers? Sappy statements like, "Scientology saved my life" really reveals how evil and repulsive the Scientology recruiting tactics are. Telling someone they'll commit suicide within a certain amount of time in order to sell courses is pretty disgusting.
Using drug abuse to recruit unwitting addicts into Scientology is pretty disgusting.
Sending creepy "ministers" to recruit the vulnerable survivors of tragedy is pretty disgusting.
And I didn't even mention Raul Lopez! You know about him, right?
No, I think my outline is just fine as it is. The minute "benefits" of Scientology are far outweighed by its destructive and criminal nature. Thanks for the input, but I think I'll stick with what I've got.
I seriously doubt anyone in my audience will be falling for the increasingly diminishing scam any time in THIS life!

I forgot to mention this earlier. When Tory and I were telling the woman who seemed to be defending Scientology that she's been lied to, Tory pointed out how they violate their own precepts.
The first item in TWTH is: 'Always tell the truth.' If they can't even follow their own doctrines, what does that say about Scientology as a religion and an organization? -- --barb Chaplain,ARSCC
