I was dismayed by your article (July 11) glorifying the dangerous cult of Scientology. There were no interviews of people who have escaped Scientology, often penniless and psychologically damaged, but lots of interviews of adherents. You say the "demands of loyalty make it difficult to leave," which is quite a euphemism for the stories of kidnapping, stalking, intimidation, threats and forcible detainment told by those who have managed to escape.
The predatory lawsuits against anyone who criticizes the "religion" are well documented, not just something a few critics "take issue with.
Scientology is also known for limiting family contacts of their "inner sanctum" activists, a typical cult tactic. How about at least mentioning the treatment of Tom Cruise's current fiance, who now has a "Scientology chaperone" who accompanies her everywhere, including all media interviews?
You could make a real journalistic contribution by publishing the stories so rarely heard of the victims of this cult.

====================
I was a Scientologist for 29 years. Fact is, Katie Holmes and these people taking courses and being audited are on the fast track of brainwashing.
Since I publicly left Scientology, I am now considered an enemy. I know I cannot convince people in the thick of it that they are being indoctrinated by this cult (as they are instructed not to talk to anyone who has left) but I can tell others that if they are interested in Scientology then by all means totally check it out — both sides — then make an informed decision.
Scientology would never recommend a person check out both sides. This is a fact.
