As I said in a previous post, February is "Buffalo Month" here on ARS, and we've got lots of fun stuff in store for you. In today's installment, we'll take a look at David Miscavige's brilliant plan to replace the Buffalo Org's timorous ED, Jeff Carlson, with a genuine Operating Thetan prior to the grand opening in late 2003. Carlson is not even Clear, and was deemed unworthy to bring about the huge boom in business that Int Mgmt expected when the new Org opened.

So who did they come up with as the new ED? Glen Byrnes, an OT brought up from Clearwater AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. (See details on him below.) Poor Jeff Carlson, who had been working for a year on the renovation of the Org, got busted down to PES (Public Executive Secretary) so that Byrnes could take his job. (Perhaps management also viewed Carlson as tainted, since the Org's top auditor had been murdered a few months earlier by Carlson's brother-in-law.) So it was Byrnes who basked in the grand opening limelight at the side of cult leader David Miscavige and clam-starlet Jenna Elfman (not Tom Cruise; that was a different grand opening). Meanwhile Jeffrey worked his ass off as a low-level staffer.

Surprise: business didn't boom at all for the new Org, and Glen Byrnes blew his post a few months later. So much for DM's brilliant plan, eh? No problem: they "rehabilitated" Carlson and made him the ED again -- just in time for him to preside over the Buffalo News blowing the lid off the Jeremy Perkins scandal, which Mark Sommer accomplished with the invaluable assistance of Teresa Reger, the ham-handed DSA. Poor Carlson: not only did he miss the grand opening glory, he got handed a shit-storm as a consolation prize. Anyone want to guess what his and Reger's ethics conditions are now?
