LRH founded the Church of American Science in 1953; see http://lisatrust.freewinds.cx/scientology/amscience1.htm The goal of this Church is to promote Scientology, but it's also based partly on the book of Luke from the Bible.

Hubbard explained that the Church of American Science "is a Christian religion" and that those who join "could gradually slide over into some sort of better, wider activity such as the Church of Scientology..." [Management Dictionary, tape 5410C04]

So Hubbard created a church as a FRONT to steer people into Scientology.
