What I have learned about Scientology I have learned reading Hubbard's own words and listening to Hubbard's own speeches and from a couple of unfortunate friends who have been sucked into this vicious and cynical fraud. I've spent nearly my entire life studying religion, so I am hardly anti-religious. An organization that charges for its "spiritual" services and which sues for violation of "trade secrets" when it's doctrine is disclosed, claiming it is financially damaged when it's bizarre teachings are made freely and openly available...it's certainly not a religion, but it is clearly a business making specific benefit claims it can't back up, and as such should be shut down like any other fraudulent enterprise and the leadership locked up.

I am not pro-psychiatry anymore than I am pro-dentistry, or pro-botany. Mental illness undeniably exists, and it is not always treatable with vitamins, happy thoughts, exercise, diet, and certainly not by clutching soup cans and discussing your previous life as Mozart or as a bivalve mollusk.

If psychiatry is indeed a party to horrible abuses as you claim, then clearly Psychiatrists and Scientologists are brothers in all but name, except I know many people who psychiatry has saved from debilitating, and even horrifying mental illness and been made able to conduct their lives normally. I only know a handful of current CoS members, and their lives have only spiraled into the dirt since they joined.
