A lawyer and defender of Scientology is to become a member of Parliament in the Swiss canton 'Jura' on January the First 2004.
Although it is understood, that a lawyer defends criminals in order to find the course why the criminals acted the way they did, one can still object to the danger to have a lawyer, who defends Scientology, in parliament.
The grounds for objection is that to defend Scientology, a lawyer has to maintain that Dianetic is not dangerous to the health. Also a lawyer must defend that the 'laws and rules' of the cult are compatible with the laws of the country. Jean-Luc Barbier from an association helping X-scientologists in Switzerland says they aren't.
"We don't believe that a lawyer can defend anti-social and society wrecking methods *and* be a politician having the freedom to act at the same time", Jean-Luc Barbier says. "Will such a politician for instance vote for a law, which can forbid Scientology to distribute flyers of it's 'Oxford Test' outside our schools and in our streets?"
