From the CW Injunction Hearings:
BY MR. MERRETT:
14 Q Okay. It is correct, sir, that your definition 15 of truth is, what is truth for you; is that right?
16 MR. POPE: Objection, Your Honor.
17 Object to the relevance of the question.
18 THE COURT: Well, to relevant 19 overruled. He can answer the question.
20 BY MR. MERRETT:
21 Q Is that the definition of truth?
(BEN SHAW) 22 A You're asking a philosophical question. What 23 is truth to me is what is actual, what has occurred.
24 What has actually happened.
25 Q Not what Hubbard defines it as?
1 A Mr. Merrett, I don't think you're an expert on 2 Mr. L. Ron Hubbard's definitions.
3 Q Would you like to see a dictionary?
4 A No, actually, I don't.
5 Q He defines, truth is what is truth for you, 6 right?
7 MR. POPE: Your Honor, objection, Your 8 Honor. This is -- this truly is irrelevant to 9 any issue before the Court.
10 THE WITNESS: Mr. Hubbard -- I'll answer 11 the question. Mr. Hubbard has many 12 descriptions what is true. What is true is 13 what is an actual occurrence, what really 14 occurred. For you to take one sentence out of 15 context of all the writing of Mr. Hubbard is 16 typical, but that is not -- your presentation 17 is not accurate.
18 BY MR. MERRETT:
19 Q Okay. You recognize this as being one of 20 Mr. Hubbard's publications?
21 A If you can put it where I can see it.
22 MR. MERRETT: May I approach?
23 THE COURT: You may, certainly.
24 THE WITNESS: Yes, I do.
25 BY MR. MERRETT:
1 Q Can you look up truth in Mr. Hubbards 2 dictionary.
3 THE COURT: For purpose of the record, 4 let's put some sort of indication into what he 5 is looking at and what he has been handed.
6 MR. POPE: Your Honor?
7 THE COURT: Yes.
8 MR. POPE: What on earth does Ron 9 Hubbard's definition of truth have to do with 10 any issue in this proceeding? It is totally 11 irrelevant. This is pure gamesmanship and 12 nonsense. It is of no probative value 13 whatsoever.
14 THE COURT: Well, since truth is the 15 very essence of what we try to establish here 16 in the courtroom, I'm intrigued by this line, 17 if nothing else. Let me see what he has to say 18 about it. He has -- Mr. Pope, your client has 19 been more willing to come forward, even though 20 you try to object to protect the answers, so 21 let's let the client proceed here on this 22 slippery slope, see what happens.
23 THE WITNESS: First off, let me explain 24 to you what this is.
25 BY MR. MERRETT:
1 Q Let me ask you a question.
2 A You asked me a question.
3 Q The question is, read for me the entire 4 definition of truth.
5 A That is not a question.
6 Q Thank you very much. Read for me the 7 definition of truth from that dictionary.
8 A Your Honor, I would like to clarify this. This 9 is taking some -- 10 THE COURT: Okay, I think what he is 11 trying to do, and he is not doing it too 12 artfully. He is asking you, what is L. Ron 13 Hubbard's definition in toto in that book on 14 truth.
15 THE WITNESS: Can I state something 16 to -- 17 THE COURT: Answer my question.
18 THE WITNESS: The definition of truth in 19 this book is: Truth is what is true for you.
20 Can I add to that, Your Honor?
21 THE COURT: I'm sorry, what?
22 THE WITNESS: Can I add to that?
23 THE COURT: Can you add to that? Sure 24 go ahead, add to it.
25 THE WITNESS: There is another 1 dictionary Mr. Merrett hasn't provided, there 2 is another dictionary of other material of 3 Scientology. This dictionary is a compilation 4 of statements and all the materials written by 5 Mr. Hubbard, in which there are millions of 6 words and there are numerous descriptions of 7 what is truth. You're asking somewhat of a 8 philosophical question, but I'll tell you that 9 any Scientologist will tell you that truth is 10 very similar to what your definition is, and 11 that is what is really happened.
12 BY MR. MERRETT:
13 Q And for the record, if you would please, close 14 the book and read for us the name of the book on the 15 spine?
16 A This is the Modern Management Technology 17 Dictionary.
18 Q By L. Ron Hubbard?
19 A That's right.
20 Q And that is part of Scientology scripture?
21 A You're right.
22 THE COURT: I'm -- let me ask you a 23 question. You said that -- you just told me 24 that that book is the dictionary?
25 THE WITNESS: Yes, sir, that is a Modern
51
1 Management Dictionary. There is also --
2 THE COURT: Management Dictionary?
3 THE WITNESS: Yes.
4 THE COURT: You said there were other 5 definitions or other dictionaries to the 6 dictionary, I was just curious to how many.
7 THE WITNESS: Well there is another 8 primary dictionary which is Dictionary of 9 Technical Material of Scientology, which has 10 more excerpts of different statements -- 11 THE COURT: I see where we're going 12 here. Okay.
The judge was probably wondering, Why did I even bother having this guy
sworn in??
I think it's apparent to the judge at this point that the way to tell if a scientologist is lying, is if his lips are moving!!!
