Man pleads no contest to a misdemeanor in library art case

The self-proclaimed "Dildo Bandito" pleaded no contest Thursday to second-degree criminal tampering, a charge stemming from the removal of 21 ceramic phalluses from the Boulder Public Library in November.
Bob Rowan, 49, of Boulder County received a one-month deferred sentence for the misdemeanor. The sentence includes staying away from the library and artist Susanne Walker, who created the ceramic work "Hanging 'Em Out to Dry," which was part of a domestic-violence-awareness art display.
"I want it to go away," Rowan said. "It's been hard for me and my wife."
Rowan has never denied taking the string of molded genitalia from the lobby of the library, but he said that was not a crime. He eventually returned them.
"I'm still appalled to think those things should have been in the front window," Rowan said. "I'm not against pornography, but not in the front window for children to see."
Police issued Rowan a summons after he called a Denver radio station and admitted swiping the artwork. He left behind an American flag and a sarcastic note that said "El Dildo Bandito was here."
The misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, but the deferred sentence was offered in a plea deal by prosecutor Cassidy Murphy. The no-contest plea means Rowan does not admit guilt to the crime but still receives a sentence from the court.
"Mr. Rowan decided to censor the community of Boulder and did it in a manner that aggrandized himself," she said. "It sounded like a campaign speech."
Boulder County Judge Thomas J. B. Reed agreed libraries are not the proper places for censorship.
"The library is a wonderful place where they don't have to hold everything he agrees (with) in them. They're better places because they don't," he said.
