In March of 1974 I was routed off the Church of Scientology staff for being PTS Type 3. PTS Type 3 is a Scientology term which classifies persons to be insane if they are anti-Scientology. My mother was upset about Scientology and called the Better Business Bureau. The Boston Church saw this as a legal threat and forced me to leave the organization. I went to work in Worcester with a construction company. At the same time the x,',~orce~+~ Scientology organization was Garrison, a good friend of mine and the Communications Course supervisor back in Boston. After work I weuld go into the organization at night and help him out getting more people to buy expensive courses. By rights this was not okay with the organization because it was illegal for me to be there according to the organization seeing that I was routed off as Type But, in most cases, rules like this were generally ignored especially since our financial stats were working out, and no flack was being caused by anyone, say attacking, or just as long as things ran .............. ~ ..... l~, ~l~ he Broken. Again, it didn't seem to make too much difference just as long as things ran smoothly. In August, Gary Brown, who had "blown" the Boston organization about a year earlier, drove up to Worcester and asked me if I would like to talk about doing some work for the Guardian's Office in Boston. The Guardian's Office is the internal police force of the organization. Its two primary functions are to maintain order in the organization and stop "attacks" by persons against Scientology by running covert operations against them. We drove around the North Shore for about two hours one night and he explained to me basically the outline of what this particular group of people were doing. They were out to protect the Church and to attack persons against the church and to discredit them. I started working in what is called O.D.C., Overt Data Collections. The Overt Data Collections were four or five people, Page Worthen was one of the people, Susan herrle, ~a~ph H~, ~ ~v~Fle o~ others that I can't remember their names. We went to libraries and looked up various people such as Mayor Kevin White, the heads of banks in Boston, members of Congress, the Massachusetts Senate, and what ties existed and what groups they were connected to, what Boards of Directors they sat on, what bank's Board of Directors they sat on and whether they had interest in television or radio stations. We looked up all the owners of the TV and radio stations in Boston and basically tried to find out as much information through different types of reference manuals, doctor's listings, ~r ~ ~ ~~ te find out where these people were connected and if there was any type of relationship between them. We were always concerned about security and from the very beginning I started looking over my shoulder. It was just something that was ingrained because we considered ourselves an intelligence organization and because people were probably trying to stop us as much as we were trying to stop them. In September, seven of us moved to a home on Foster Road in Tewksbury that we rented. The seven were Monk Bristol, Nancy Foster, Bill Foster, Peter Marques, Gary Brown, Kathy Brown and me. Once we moved into the house we purchased a van through my bank in Canton and got a loan and bought a new van. The daily routine involved me, Gary Brown, Monk Bristol, Nancy Foster and Kathy Brown driving into Boston. Monk worked at the Lindemann Mental Health Center. Nancy Foster worked at the Consumer's Council. Kathy Brown worked at the Federal Reserve Bank. Gary and I were part of the Overt Data Collection and we generally would go to the library or make different phone calls to ccmF~=~ or places to gather information and it is very vague now to remember exactly the day-to-day cycles that we handled. The major things the group did as a whole were to steal Paulett Cooper's file from her doctor's office in Belmont Center and to have Monk Bristol placed in the Attorney General's office so that he could watch for attacks there and he did spot an attack from, believe it or not, my mother, Robert Johnson's mother and father and Ralph Hilts' mother. They were trying to get Mike Taihibe of Channel 5 to do a special on Scientology because they were u~--=L "~-~ ~c :;~r~ all Scientologists. We placed David Grace with a cleaning company in order to clean the law offices the Boston Globe was using. Cleaning the offices allowed Grace access to the Globe's files. The Globe was currently being sued by Scientology for an article that ^= 'tin~ another article was written and was also in the p~ocess ~ wrl ~ . Joe Wood was the author of the second article. He was put under surveillance by Peter Marquez, who was part of CDC, which is; Covert Data Collections, to find out his daily routine and what he did. We never actually did anything to Joe to my knowledge. We discussed different things we could do. The Massachusetts gun law was passed and we considered planting a gun in his van. That was never undertaken. George's locating the attack at the Attorney General's office comes much later on in the history of this bureau one line. Kathy Grace was located in the Better Business Bureau. There were roughly four people that worked there ~u ~ ~=~ Business Bureau chief had received many calls about Scientology and during the course of the time Kathy was there he had mellowed out on his attacks against the Church. We considered this a big win. The problem he was facing was not enough manpower to handle what he probably wanted to do, but just couldn't get enough evidence or have the wherewithall to bring a full-fledged attack against the Church. Susan Heffle worked in LEAA, Law Enforcement Assistance Association. Her post did not bring in very much data. Our statistics were called incldences and connections. Individuals that were connected to ...... the banker has interests in several banks, every bank that he has an interest in is a connection, any other organization, if he is connected to the boy scouts, it is a connection which equals a statistic, one point. The incidences were things that possibly would happen in work, if someone was to bring up the subject of Sciento!ogy at the Attorney General 's office while Monk was there, that was considered an incident. We read the newspapers and anything that happened in the mental health field was usually an incident. If the Boston Globe was sued for any reason, because they were attacking us, that was an incident. If Paulette Cooper's doctor fell down, it would be an incident. However, we never even knew who he was, but shows what we were looking for and how we were trying to make connections between these people. On a daily basis, reports had to be made. I would count up the number of incidence= ~a connections that overt aa~a during the day. Each individual when they came home would write up their data report, what happened in work, how things went, how we were progressing on individual projects. It is difficult to remember what projects were going on each individual place. To capsulize them, there was Nancy Foster in the Consumer's Council, George Bristol at the Lindemann Mental Health Center, David Grace worked for the cleaning company and was cleaning the Globe's lawyer's office, Susan Heffle worked in LEAA. George Bristol eventually alert the Lindemann Mental Health Center and became a volunteer at the Attorney General's Office in the Consumer'.~ Department. Most of the big cycles that happened while we had this line in Tewksbury happened after Christmas in early 1975. This is when Gary Brown and Peter Marquez broke into the psychiatrist's office and stole Paulette Cooper's folder. Bill Foster, who was the captain, or CO of wha~ .... ~]]~d The L~ne: and I drove down and dropped them off, waited for some time at a restaurant and went back and picked them up after they had stolen the file. This was considered a big accomplishment because Paulette Cooper had been such a thorn in the side of Scientology. David Grace at this time also managed to get the correspondence between the lawyers and the reporters that were working on the Scientology story at the Boston Globe. The Consumer's Council where Nancy Foster worked generally was not a real good source of information. Things did not, Scientology did not come up as an everyday thing. The Attorney General's office, where Monk Bristol worked, was a different o+ .... There were more people with complaints. In early spring, Monk came across what would be called an incident. He in fact, went out to my mother's home and visited with her, Robert Johnson, Mrs. Johnson and Ralph Hilts, Mrs. Hilts, Ralph's mother. These parents were interested in getting Mike Taihibe to do a report on Channel 5 against Scientology. At this point, Bob Johnson and myself were sent home to "handle" our parents. Immediately, because of so many different PTS handlings that had been done through the church over the years my mother knew exactly why I was home and basically figured out that George Bzistol was a Scientologist, basically he had infiltrated the Attorney General's office, and she knew that he was not legitimately an agent of the Attorney General's office. Somehow we managed to quell our parents. My mother signed a release stating that she would never attack the church. Bob Johnson's parents did the same. This ú - ---~k~., u~h m~,h~ even late happened in roughly April. Back in February, the line underwent a change. Gary Brown, myself, and Page up after they had stolen the file. This happened in roughly April ..... : .... ~.. u~rch ma~,h~ even late February, the line underwent a change. Gary Brown, myself, and Page Worthen, went back into the church. We located our office on the top floor of the Guardian's Office of the Boston church and we continued to~run the individuals in the field. At the same time we were still living in Tewksbury. We tried to think tl~a'c we had ~ ..... zccur:~'' but we never accomplished it. Deke Finn ran the line from the Church originally. He had taken another blown Scientologist, named Jeff Fahey. Jeff came to us and he was set up by Deke to infiltrate our line and to fiqure out how good our security was. In a matter of two or three days Jeff knew everyone that was on the line, knew that there was an Overt Data Collections, Covert Data Collections and another called "operations". Operations was handled by Nancy Foster. This was the area where letters were written to discredit different people. Valentine was one of the individuals that third party letters were mailed out on. All of the information that we gathered, files that were stolen, were xeroxed and put into weekly reports. The weekly reports were taken by Bill Foster, who was the CO of the Line, to Deke Finn. They would usually meet somewhere in the Copley Square area, discuss what had been going on during the week and Deke would present Bill with any new programs that had to be implemented. The information Deke would take back to the Org and send it up lines. As far as I know the information went to Guardian's Worldwide in Sussex, England. The Paulette Cooper file, the Globe file, once these were taken from the respective areas they were xeroxed and sent up lines and eventually put back. Paulette Cooper's file was gone from the office for almost two months. It was left kicking around the house after it was xeroxed and had basically been forgotten about until eventually Peter Marquez and Gary took it back on a Saturday afternoon and just misfiled it in the doctor's office under a different letter. This line was made up of all blo~.~. _=tall members. Everyone at one time had blown the Boston church. Myself, I had a different case because I was routed off PTS Type III and had been given a leave of absence and was supposedly off handling this PTS Type III situation and was eventually going to be back on staff on my original post at the Boston church. However, one of the conditions for joining the line is that we ...... ~~ that we were now members of this ~ Bureau I Intelligence Line. Our freeaoader's debts were cancelled and we were good Scientologists, we were Scientologists in good standing. However, it wasn't really the case. We had all petitioned to have our freeloader's debts cancelled. We never received acknowledgment that they were. In the late spring, after George Bristol had come up to my parent's home, he was busted somehow by the Attorney General's office. Because I was off in Canton handling my mother I didn't know exactly what happened. The reprecussions were that the whole office upstairs, all our files and all our weekly reports, I had different lock-picking devices and some electronic gear, but ~oL even electronics gear, it was information on alot of electronics gear on bugging, different things like this, the office was completely emptied out. All of the data was taken. I don't know where it was put, if it left the org, if it was burned, I don't know what happened to it. The line was completely disbanded and we weren't allowed to communicate with anyone else that was on the line. Peter Marquez was married, living with Polly, I can't remember her last name. Polly was also on the line, her and Susan Heffle lived together, I don't remember exactly Polly's post. She was more secretive about her work than others were or perhaps it is because i d-' ~- ' ~, t know ~ __ ..cr tkat :-:~!. This _a. oe~ nn~ mean that she had a more secretive post and did things that I wasn't aware of it was just that she had more or less stayed in the background. They were living in Boston. I was not allowed to communicate with them. George Bristol disappeared. I don't know where he is to this day. In speaking with Bob Johnson, the GO at Boston, he will nob Wive r~e a ~:-ect ....... where George Bristol is now. George was interrogated by government agents, I don't know ~ .~t wa.~ the FBI. tax agents, I'm really not sure, but there was a pretty big shake-up in Boston after George was busted. Nancy Foster and Bill Foster went down to FOLO East U.S. in New York City. I was off working. I wasn't on staff or I wasn't working on the B1 lines because I had been routed off to handle the PTS situation. Bob Johnson had just come into the GO at this time and was taking over Deke Finn's position of running the Intelligence Line. We had both gotten statements from our parents stating that they would not attack the church. Bob elected to go into the organization and continue working. ú was fed up at this time and wasn't interested in working in Boston. After a few weeks I decided to go down to FOLO East US and I went down and stayed there approximately six weeks. At one time I did want to leave. I was there more because of the fact that Nancy Foster had been up a couple of times from New York to talk me into going down and I finally did go down. I was on staff there for about six weeks. I was in training to do an observation mission to the Philadelphia organization. During the training a call came from Bob Raymer, who was the Guardian at the Boston church and I was immediately sent back to Boston. Upon getting back into Boston I was given a security check, an auditing session which lasted about four hours. it was probably one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I was continually asked the same question over and over again and the question regarded Deke Finn and what overts I had made against Deke Finn. Because of this I didn't want to have anything to do with the organization again. There is alot of politics in Scientology and somehow I ended up on the wrong side and after that I just couldn't make things work out very easily in any direction. Suddenly I was saddled with a freeloader's debt again, I had deserted my post, which actually I had been routed off PTS Type 3 and I was just generally disgusted and I left the church, I left the organization entirely. Gary Brown and Kathy Brown continued to work as ~ Assistant b~ staff ~n~u~. F=L=~ ~,,d Fcll~ ~rquez moved out to ~, they worked out there for awhile and paid off their freeloader's debt. David Grace went out to LA and I believe is now in the Sea Organization. Kathy Grace, his wife, I believe they were divorced, but Kathy is working in ~ also in the Church. In the spring of 1978, Julie Bergman, a Boston staff member had finally gotten into the Guardian's Office on Bureau I lines and contacted me regarding the Bureau I Lines. I was asked to write up all of the informtion and I felt as though I was being, they were checking me out to find out exactly what I knew and how good or bad a witness I would be if I had ever -11- decided to attack the church. They wanted to know exactly what I saw, what I did not see, what I participated in, what I did not participate in. Being a number of years ago, it is difficult now to remember exactly all of the cycles that I had done. At one point I had made trips to Rhode Island to, in one case it was a branch of the World Mental Health Association, I went in as a distressed brother of a Scientologist. I had to find out if the psychiatrists or doctors there were actively attacking the church. One of Scientology's major premises is that the World Mental Health Association is covertly attacking them. I really did not find any evidence that the church was being attacked by these doctors. Jeff Fahey, the individual that was brought out by Deke to infiltrate the line had been doing work for Deke Finn in other areas covertly collecting information. He was a security guard at the Boston Globe and was becoming friends with Joe Wood, the author of the attack on Scientology. Jeff did also some covert work with realtors and possible potential buyers of the building that the church now owns in Boston. He represented himself as a buyer of the building or a potential buyer of the building and bd~i~ily out who was interested in the building and who would be bidding for the building. Jeff had some success with Joe Wood in talking about Scientology and getting information as to what the article was going to be like. I was on the line from August 1974 to May of ~,,,= ~ ..... ~ics ;-:ere a!;.:ays up. Tt always easy to find the C's and I's, connections and incidences- We did quite a bit of parrying. Fridays and Saturdays we were usually .pretty drunk, or quite a bit of drinking took place. Originally I was in the library collecting overt data collections and in a matter of months I literally had no job. I had several people under me all doing the work for me. David Grace, Peter Marquez, George Bristol, Page Worthen, these people somehow all became my juniors. The connections and incidences just kept rolling in every week and our statistics were always up. The one thing that scares me about this type of thing that we a~a 1s tnat aurinq ~ne time I was on this Bureau I we would have, I felt, done anything or carried out any project that would have come down to us from the GO Worldwide. The house we rented in Tewksbury was a seven room house, a ranch, located on Foster Road. The rent was roughly $400 per month. When we left the house in April, we left a $200 electric bill. I had three gas credit cards that had roughly $800 charged to the limit on each of them. Phone bills were up in the $100's of dollars. The phone bill was eventually paid. The credit card I paid off myself over the next couple of years. The e]~-~ctric Lj.J. 1 Nothing was really destroyed or broken. We kept a low profile in the neighborhood. Generally didn't get to know any of the neighbors and came and went as we pleased. _qigpe~. ~lna~r the pains and penalties of perjury this 7th day of October, 1980. , 'x~ ,',, r~ ,r,,\\,, ",, Robert Dardano ================================================================= If this is a copyrighted work, you are acknowledging by receipt of this document from FACTNet that on the basis of reasonable investigation, you have not been to obtain a copy elsewhere at a fair price, and that you are and will abide by the following copyright warning.
