For those of you who haven't been following, the MPAA has been suing a number of people over "breaking" the "protection" system used by DVD's. The judge's ruling came out today, and is available at http://www.nysd.uscourts.gov/courtweb/pdf/D02NYSC/00-08117.PDF I find p.86 of the ruling the most interesting:
Second, and closely related, is the fact that this Court is sorely "troubled by the notion that any Internet user . . . can destroy valuable intellectual property rights by posting them over the Internet."273
Reference 273 turns out to be:
273 Religious Tech. Ctr. v. Netcom On-Line Comm. Servs., Inc., 923 F. Supp. 1231, 1256 (N.D. Cal. 1995).The MPAA is trying to control everyone's ability to read DVD's.
That is, you can only read DVD's in the method that they choose, in the times and places that they choose, and using DVD readers that they approve of.
Why am I not surprised that one of the supporting cases for the judge's position is one from Scientology?
