Tripping Scientology's Trigger Happy Coincidence number 3 Earth to Earthlink, come in EarthlinkSeveral years ago, I started doing business with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). That ISP (cvn) was bought by a bigger ISP (supernet). That ISP was bought by yet another ISP, called OneMain. Earlier this year OneMain was bought by Earthlink, a Scientology company (see www.SlatkinFraud.COM).
I had no problems going from supernet to OneMain. Everything was behind the scenes and transparent to me. The only reason I knew it was a different ISP is that I received notification of that fact, and payment went to a different company. Notice that the letter is signed by a real human being with a real name.
(see http://www.innernet.net/joecisar/trip0201.htm) Then, on May 1, 2001, I was notified that I was to become "a member of the Earthlink family." I had suspected something was up, because when Earthlink started to take over OneMain, I was forced to change my e-mail address, which contradicted the original notification from OneMain.=20 (see http://www.innernet.net/joecisar/trip0202.htm) Notice also that this letter was signed by a faceless gang who called themselves "The OneMain/EarthLink Team." In addition, Earthlink wanted to charge more money, even with the prepaid discount plan. Furthermore, Earthlink encouraged me to obligate myself to one or two years of service with Earthlink. This was at the time Reed Slatkin, co-founder of Earthlink, had gotten publicity for running the largest ponzi scheme in US history.
On June 16, 2001 the following letter was sent to the address given on the OneMain bill:
June 16, 2001 Dear Sirs I am canceling my Internet service with you [sic] company.I sent the letter via certified mail, article number: 7000 15 300003 5401 8302. The green card came back with an "Earthlink" stamp on it, postmarked June 21, 2001. Service was thereby cancelled. Or was it?I have paid my bill up to June 28, 2001.
Thank you for providing me with Internet service in the past, but I no longer require your service.
Sincerely, Joseph Cisar Acct No: jc1019454-8
TWO MONTHS LATER, on August 23, 2001, I received a bill from Earthlink, total due: $19.95. I wrote the following letter to the address given on the bill from Earthlink:
August 23, 2001 Dear Sirs Today I received a bill from Earthlink for $19.95.Sure enough, on August 27, I received another bill from Earthlink, along with some junk mail. I wrote back to the address given on the bill: "I received another bill from you for more money today. I assume that means you do not have your records straightened out yet. While you are busy with that, I have another request. Please take me off your junk mail list. The envelope is postmarked Aug 20=9201 Atlanta GA. The invoice billing date is 7/1 and the due date is 8/22. Today is August 23.=20 I have a certified mail receipt from Earthlink stating that my letter cancelling services was received by Earthlink on June 21, 2001. I stated in my letter to you =93I am canceling my Internet service with you company. I have paid my bill up to June 28, 2001.
Thank you for providing me with Internet service in the past, but I no longer require your service.=94 Today, having received your bill one day after its due date for services I did not order or use, I will take a few minutes to let you know why I chose not wish to do business with your company.=20 The company you bought was a working system.
When it took over from another company, any changes were transparent to me. There was not a flurry of mail to let me know that everything would be changing, as there was with Earthlink, and there was not a subsequent flurry of mail that contradicted the first wave of mail. Once I received the second Earthlink letter to let me know that I should ignore what you had written in the first letter, I knew I was up against a company that wasted money. So I did some research.=20 Reed Slatkin, co-founder of Earthlink, is under investigation by the FBI for the largest Ponzi scheme in the USA. Not a good sign. But there=92s more. Reed Slatkin was practicing Scientology, the one that uses Hubbard Management Technology.
That is the production system so similar to Nazism that the German government makes people sign a piece of paper verifying they do not use it. I am happy I looked into these expensive changes to a system that already worked fine. I am not happy that my suspicions are proving true.=20 Sincerely, Joseph Cisar copy to: Bureau of Consumer Protection=20
Besides receiving bills from Earthlink for service I cancelled in June, I also received an earthlink magazine with a rather grotesque drawing of a naked woman with tatoos over he back suckling an infant. (see http://www.innernet.net/joecisar/ecover.gif) In order to be of assistance to you, here is a copy of the letter I sent you August 23, 2001: (above letter followed, with another copy to the Bureau of Consumer Protection) On September 17, 2001, the Bureau of Consumer Protection wrote me a letter thanking me for bringing case number:
Earthlink, A-003476-2001 to their attention.
On October 26, 2001, I received another bill from Earthlink, total due: $83.80. I also received an Earthlink letter informing me that, according to Earthlink's records, my account was past due. It also informed me that to avoid inactivation of my account I should make payment and "be sure to include your account number." "Despite our best efforts, billing errors can occur. If you believe you received this notice in error, please provide us information that will help us resolve this matter as soon as possible by sending email to pastdue@mindspring.com or b calling Customer Service at one of the numbers listed above.
We value you as a customer and would like to continue serving you. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely, The EarthLink Accounting Group."
Again, another faceless, mechanical EarthLink Group, mindlessly following its operating instructions, incapable of interaction with human beings. Two notable things on the past-due letter. 1) for the first time, I was told to use the Earthlink account number and 2) the method of contact given in this letter is different than the method on the Earthlink bills. On the bills, it says, "Please send written correspondence to EarthLink Inc. PO Box 7645 Atlanta GA 30357-7645." That is where I sent the previous two letters. I was not about to start playing phone-tag or email-tag with people who are not capable of answering their mail.
Finally, on November 9, 2001, I received another letter from the Bureau of Consumer Protection, whose author was pleased inform me that my complaint had been settled. Under no circumstances will I publish this letter from Bob McNamara of EarthLink Headquarters, as I do not believe he meant for it for public distribution. If I were a corporate executive of the third largest ISP in the US, though, I would be more careful of my word selection than Mr. McNamara was in writing to the state Office of the Attorney General, which is the agency that Consumer Protection falls under in my area.
By the way, Mr. McNamara's letter was dated October 17, 2001, but it was not received by the Office of the Attorney General until November 5. This and the prior lapses of times between dates of bills and postmarks indicate to me that Earthlink, more as a matter of routine than anything else, backdates its own letters. In other words, the date on Earthlink correspondence does not correspond to the date it was signed.
Also, when Earthlink was dealing with an official government agency, that agency was provided contact with a real person, a Mr. McNamara, which is more advantage than I ever received in dealing with Earthlink.
Now for some of my comments. Earthlink is a big company that handles tens or hundreds of thousands of customers. When you handle that many people at one time, you soon get an idea of all the things that can happen. One of the things that's going to happen is that people are going to address correspondence to the address you give them for correspondence.=20 In my experience, the high-paid EarthLink power professionals ignore communications from their customers, or potential customers. For me it was easier to leave Scientology than it was to shake Earthlink.
