Note that this person purchased tech for less that one penny on the dollar. I've also been following the tech being sold on EBay, so many times the opening bid on a book is $4.00. When you consider that EBay charges $2.00 to list an item, this means the seller is willing to getting back only $2.00 on an approx $40.00 original purchase.
--------------------- Dear Ted, Since your foray into the eBay arena, I've been kind of watching the sales of Scientology- related materials there (ha ha ha, I thought maybe I could pick up a copy of the NOTs real cheap). It's facinating how cheap some of the stuff is. How do these people make any money off their sales? Especially considering how much they paid originally for the items.
It also got me to thinking about just how VALUABLE the Tech is. It's so valuable that Scienos try to dump it on eBay at deep discounts. As low as those prices are, the valuable Tech can be had for even less, if you're a careful (and serendipitous) shopper.
Some guy advertised a bunch of books and tapes (most of them brand new), and a few of those dorky "Ron" magazines, so I contacted him to see if he'd let me pick and choose. He was anxious to get rid of the dreck, er, "Tech," and make a little money (emphasis on little). So I arranged to buy a few books and some tapes.
Let me share a few examples of the stuff I bought to show how valuable the Tech really is.
The Red (Tech) and Green (OEC) Volumes are the centerpiece of any good Scieno's library. There are 18 Reds and 12 Greens.
Co$ sells the Reds for $150/book (or a discount price of only $2500 if you buy the whole set at once) and the Greens for $175/book ($1925). BTW, I'm looking at a 1996 price list.
I paid $1/book.
Co$ sells its tape packs for about $30/tape (give or take), so things like "Games and the Spirit of Play" (13 tapes) would cost about $390; "Radiation and Your Survival" (10 tapes) would be about $300; and the "Study Tapes" (12 tapes --yeah, I got the extra 3 tapes that Safe says have been added, or did he say they've been taken out of some packs, I forget) would go for about $360.
I paid $.25/tape.
Actually, I could have gotten the stuff cheaper if I'd driven to the seller's location to pick them up: he said he'd give me an even lower price if he didn't have to bother with packing and shipping. But I'm a lazy slob and let him mail them to me. Cheap, 4th class, book-rate postage cost more than the materials.
So I am impressed with just how valuable the Tech must be, with prices like this.
Your friend,
