1. On average, only one out of 50,000 electroconvulsive therapy treatments performed in the UK results in a fatality. This is approximately 10% of the death rate encountered in natural childbirth. Why aren't the Scientologists campaigning against women having babies?
[ref: Abrams, R. - "The mortality rate with ECT", Convulsive Therapy, 1997b 13; 125-7] 2. A study published in 1998 recorded the results of 15,240 ECTs delivered in Texas between 1993-95. 97.5% were done voluntarily, 1.5% involuntarily and 0.9% with the consent of guardians or courts. No adverse effects occurred during treatment itself but eight patients - 0.05% of the total - died within 14 days of having received ECT. Seven of these deaths were unrelated to the treatment; the eighth was an elderly man who had chronic heart trouble and died of a heart attack in the doctor's waiting room. How does this square with Scientology's claims that ECT is causing death on a large scale?
