This letter appears in the June 2001 issue of Atlantic Monthly:
"Shock and Disbelief," by Daniel Smith (February Atlantic), was a major contribution to the treatment of individuals with severe psychiatric disorders. Electroconvulsive therapy has been badly underused, to the detriment of our patients, because of opposition to it by Scientologists and other anti-psychiatry groups. Your story was scientifically correct, which is much more important than being politically correct.
