E-SKEPTIC FOR MAY 16 Copyright Skeptics Society, Skeptic magazine, Michael Shermer HOW TO GET OUT OF A CULT This Sunday, May 21 at 2:00pm at Caltech's Baxter Lecture Hall, Steven Hassan of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center and author of the new book RELEASING THE BONDS: Combatting Cult Mind Control and Empowering People to Think for Themselves, will speak about his personal experiences both as a member of a cult (the Moonies) and now as a cult exit counselor.

He is, as I discovered, even the subject of a chapter in a book written by a social psychologist about how someone can go from being a young, bright, middle-class college student to giving everything up in the course of just a couple of weeks. How can a group get someone to do this? What techniques of persuasion and influence do they apply?
