It's a shame because it does have some great features to it, and some glitches that can drive you nuts if you're not careful.

I am a little confused why this is. Why not just sell what you can, even if it's at $5 per copy? A reasonable fee as far as I am concerned.

Gravity is probably one of the best news reader to use with reading ARS; it specializes in kill filtering. You have three ways to killfile what you don't want to see. You have:

1) a general filter that can give you different views of the articles. One of my favorites is to see only the articles that are original, I.e. without any replies. You can zip through ARS in the matter of minutes. And that, BTW, is where Rod Keller must get his WIR articles.

The filter can do many things, almost everything your killfile can do without changing the content of the articles. That's good because I like to look at the raw feed now and again.

As a matter of fact I have just about resolved how to eliminate seeing psych posts through filtering. It's a dream, really. :) 2) The next way is "rules." Through rules you have some of the options as filtering but you can physically manipulate your articles. Like discard them, or forward them via Email, or even put them in a file, and quite a few things more. It's almost an "IF and THEN" solution. IF the program sees this, then do that...

But watch out, rules are powerful. You could easily mark all your articles read or do something else if you don't know what you're doing. I've done it before and it's not fun.

To give you an example what I have done with rules here's something cool. When someone replies to me my news reader makes a sound. It alerts me when I want it to.

3) The last way is by scoring. When you score alone it does very little but add a score to a certain article. You have to use rules and/or filtering to be able to manipulate your posts with scoring.

But if you read ARS with any kind of fervor then it is worth it. I suggest to take your time with it and go easy, and RTFM!

If you take your time to read the manual -- for those not privy to acronyms :-> -- and learn one feature at a time you will learn it in no time, like a month. Probably better than I do. I *still* haven't read the whole thing. :) I can even share some of my really cool filters, and possibly even my ultimate rule/score/filter where I cut out most of the psych stuff if ARSers are interested. But I would want to do it all at once, and do it on a different NG than this one, like alt.usenet.offline-newsreader. I might be setting myself up for hell here. But I'll take the chance.

AND, that doesn't include people who don't RTFM and want to be taken by the hand. :) You can ask, but you may not receive.
