Too bad for her...maybe this will cheer her up?
Representative Lowey, I read today of your disappointment following the vote for membership in this Commission.
Personally, I feel the vote was a just one. The United States currently has no place dictating its human rights views on the rest of the world.
In this country today, predatory, coercive groups are allowed to feed on innocent citizens, use the justice system in a punitive fashion, destroy lives and families without repercussion from the system that is supposed to be in place to protect us. Some hide behind the guise of religion, and claim exemption because of that. When George W. Bush and the Bush family has "Rev." Sung Myung Moon and Richard (Amway) DeVos as personal friends, I hardly think that our country is in a position to tell the rest of the world how to manage the treatment of their people.
Both the Unification Church and Amway fulfill the requirements necessary to be catagorized as cults. Scientology, another cult, repeatedly is allowed to use the courts to punish those who exercise their First Amendment rights to protest their criminal actions. These groups cause untold sorrow and damage to people who innocently fall under their influence, as well as to families and friends of the victims.
Some European countries, specifically Germany and France, have a clearer view of the true nature of these groups and are taking steps to curtail their predatory behavior. The best thing you can do for your country is to inform yourself, not only of these specific groups, but of the quantifiable characteristics of cults in general. When we finally have informed politicians making educated decisions based on solid data, rather than those who listen to celebrities trotted out by these groups, the United States will be fit to join the Commission on Human Rights. As it now stands, it seems to me that the United States is violating human rights by turning a blind eye to these wealthy, influential, criminal groups.
