SUNSHINE SHIELDS SCIENTOLOGY SEDITION
Thursday May 31, 2001, was a warm sunny day in Los Angeles, California. One of those picture postcard blue-sky days. I took a stroll down the Catalina Street side of the old Cedars-Sinai Hospital building in Hollywood, which we now know as the Church of Scientology's " Big Blue" building. Apparently, Hubbard purchased the cheapest paint he could find which, at the time, was a light blue. Although Hubbard is long dead, his cheap blue paint still flakes on and on. Perhaps benefiting from Slatkin's alleged $650 million "ponzi" investment fund, scientology's Estate Projects Force (EPF) seems unusually flush with cash. A commercial paving company is repaving the parking lot at the Sunset Boulevard end of the block. The other buildings on the block are also being renovated. An apparently enhanced esthetic sense has led to a new color scheme of contrasting light and dark blue paints. Some months ago I commented on the obviously dangerous and code busting "berthing" (staff bunk/rack accommodation) in Big Blue itself. There is now a major "renos" project on the West Wing of Big Blue. The side of the building has been sandblasted back to the cement skin. Windows are being repaired and installed. Outside the Catalina Street entrance to Big Blue about 15 EPF staffers were being taught how to prepare and paint the building. It seems work is being done at night too. The group of EPFers was primarily teenagers and young adults. They were under the control of the Pacific Area Command. This is their "PAC Base." Around the other side of Big Blue, on L. Ron Hubbard Way, two tables were set up with literature. One displaying a High Winds anniversary issue with Church of Scientology Sea Organization jet fighter planes rocketing towards planet Earth A few people were sitting around. Several staffers were on the street scurrying from one place to another. "Help Wanted" and "Sea Org Recruiting Now" posters were everywhere. "The Sea Organization is composed of the aristocracy of Scientology," wrote L. Ron Hubbard. Several posters promoted an imminent lecture on Science of Survival. L. Ron Hubbard's Science of Survival is a fundamental work of scientology "scripture". For example, it describes scientology's "Tone Scale" in detail. Anyone who is 2.0 or lower on scientology's tone scale, " . . . should not have, in any thinking society, any civil rights of any kind --- none below 2.0 should be used as witnesses or jurors in courts of law." Id. I-131. Scientology deems homosexuals to be perverts and they are by definition 1.1 on the "Tone Scale". So are all people who impede scientology's takeover of the governments, businesses and media around throughout the world. "The 1.1 finds 'pleasure' in sex only if sex is engaged upon with many people and in strange and peculiar ways." Id. II-91. Screeds could be written upon the irony of scientology labeling all gay people as "perverts." However, the scientology scripture continues, "No social order will survive which does not remove these people from their midst." Id. I-90. Then scientology directs the "ultimate solution" for all of the 1.1s in our society and that solution is quarantine and extermination. Scientology will attempt to re-educate the quarantined according to the Church of Scientology's own inverted concept of "ethics". That is the first way scientology will deal with "criminals" such as homosexuals and people of other religions who are unwilling to be submissive to scientology's dominion. "The other is to dispose of them quietly and without sorrow." Id. I-157. "The only answer would seem to be the permanent quarantine of such persons from society to avoid the contagion of their insanities and the general turbulence which they bring into any order, thus forcing it lower on the scale, or processing such persons until they have attained a level on the tone scale which gives them value." Id. I-131. "Such people should be taken from the society as rapidly as possible and uniformly institutionalized --- " Id. I-89. The church scripture even rationalizes such unparalled horror by preaching that, "It is easier to do psychometry [tone scale testing] on one hundred and fifty million people than to bury a culture for which we and our fathers have striven these past hundred and seventy-five years." Id. II-91. [I have the 1971 edition]. Not even Adolf Hitler proposed such vast, heinous and barbaric treatment of the "genetically impure". Assuming a current world population of six billion people, the scientology enterprise is scripturally mandated to quarantine and "dispose" of as many as 150 million innocent people. Crowning the gates into a former Nazi concentration camp near Munich, Germany are the immortal words: "Those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them." Our nation has forgotten some of history's lessons. Tax-free dollars now fund the Church of Scientology sedition and persecution of our (tax paying) citizens. The United States Departments of State, Treasury and Commerce, under President Clinton, threatened Germany and Sweden with trade sanctions for not recognizing scientology as a legitimate religion and for refusing to conceal scientology's religious scriptures as "trade secrets". A United States federal judge holds, in essence, that the copyright laws can be used to shield criminal conduct. Commenting, a Wall Street Journal editorial says scientology turns copyright law on its head. Europe quietly retaliates and leads the recent vote to successfully remove the United States from the UN Commission on Human Rights. The United States government, under President Bush's Faith Based initiative, then proposes to give scientology actual taxpayer money to fund the Church of Scientology "dissemination" and "recruitment" program behind "front groups" such as ABLE, Applied Scholastics and Narconon's own version of the Purification Rundown. Has scientology reformed as it claims? How can it? The "technology" and "scriptures" were claimed to be unalterable following the mysterious death of L. Ron Hubbard in 1986.Recently, in court filings, I described the scientology enterprise and church as "the most evil organization on the planet." It is forever damned by its own "scriptures" such as Science of Survival, being promoted today on a street the Los Angeles City Council voted to rename in "honor" of L. Ron Hubbard. However, as I had told the assembled Los Angeles City Council: "L. Ron Hubbard's Way is not the American Way." As I contemplated all of this I walked on. The warm late spring sun masked the darkness, death and horror being promoted inside that seemingly innocuous structure we know as "Big Blue". A former hospital and place of mercy is now being renovated in a new unit of time as the Church of Scientology's Base for its Pacific Area Command. And as I walked on I rejoiced in not being one of those naval uniformed scientology staffers employed, for long hours and little money, in a web of deceit, deception and fraud. As a St. Petersburg Times editor wrote last week: "that's not like any church we know." Of course, this is merely my own personal analysis, evaluation and opinion. * Graham Berry
