Wife Accuses 'Mental' Expert Of Torturing Her
LOS ANGELES, April 24 (UP). The wife of L. Ron Hubbard, dianetics founder, charged in a divorce suit yesterday that he subjected her to "scientific torture experiments" and is suffering from a mental ailment.
Mrs. Sara Northrup Hubbard, 25, charged in her divorce suit that Hubbard subjected her to "systematic torture" through denial of sleep, beatings, strangulations, and suggestions that she kill herself, "as a divorce would hurt his reputation."
Hubbard Called Insane
As a consequence, she and her medical advisers concluded that Hubbard, 40, is "hopelessly insane," her petition stated.
"Competent medical advisers recommended that Hubbard be committed to a private sanitarium for psychiatric observation and treatment of a mental ailment known as paranoid schizophrenia," it said.
The complaint said the Hubbard Dianetics Research Foundation, which deals with the "modern science of mental health," did more than $1,000,000 business in 1950.
Mrs. Hubbard said she married Hubbard Aug. 10, 1946, at Chestertown, Md., on his representation he was unmarried. But she claimed it was not until December, 1947, that he obtained a divorce at Port Orchard, Wash., from Margaret Grubb Hubbard.
$500,000 Demanded
Should the court find she is not legally Hubbard's wife as a result, Mrs. Hubbard demanded $500,000 damages "to compensate her for the golden years of a woman's life.
Mrs. Hubbard asked a court to restrain Hubbard from harassing her and to compel him to submit to psychiatric examination.
She also asked sole custody of their child, Alexis, 13 months, after charging in a habeas-corpus action earlier this month that Hubbard abducted the child Feb. 23.

In 1950, Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard was published. The book contains an curiously high number of references to abortion and attempted abortion. Here are a few samples:
"And in the case of the ulcers, here was baby poked full of holes (Mama is having a terrible time trying to abort him so she can pretend a miscarriage, and she uses assorted household instruments thrust into the cervix to do it)..."
"Fathers, for instance, suspicious of paternity, sometimes claim while trouncing and upsetting mothers that they will kill the child if it isn't like Father."
"The standard attempted abortion case nearly always has an infanthood and childhood full of Mama assuring him that he cannot remember anything when he was a baby. She doesn't want him to recall how handy she was, if unsuccessful, in her efforts with various instruments..."
"Attempted abortion is very common. And remarkably lacking in success. The mother, every time she injures the child in such a fiendish fashion, is actually penalizing herself."
"The basic proved to be a mutual abortion attempt by the mother and father. The mother said she would die if anyone found out.... The father said the baby was probably like her and he didn't want it. Eighteen penetrations of the head, throat and shoulders with a long orange-wood stick - probably in third month. "
One would think that Hubbard was a man who was opposed to abortion, until evidence surfaced that showed Hubbard was writing from his PERSONAL experiences performing abortions on his own wife. In 1983 an interview with L. Ron Hubbard Jr. was published, and it contained this horrorific description of Ron Jr.'s witnessing his father attempting an abortion on his mother:
"Hubbard: ... I have a memory of this that goes back to when I was six years old. It is certainly a problem for my father and for Scientology that I rememoer this. It was around 1939, 1940, that I watched my father doing something to my mother. She was lying on the bed and he was sitting on her, facing her feet. He had a coat hanger in his hand. There was blood all over the place. I remember my father shouting at me. "Go back to bed!" A little while later a doctor came and took her off to the hospital. She didn't talk about it for quite a number of years. Neither did my father.
Penthouse: He was trying to perform an abortion?
Hubbard: According to him and my mother, he tried to do it with me. I was born at six and a half months and weighed two pounds, two ounces. I mean, I wasn't born: this is what came out as a result of their attempt to abort me. It happened during a night of partying --he got involved in trying to do a black-magic number. Also, I've got to complete this by saying that he thought of himself as the Beast 666 incarnate."
If Ron Jr.'s memory was accurate, Hubbard was a hypocrite. While he was denouncing abortion in public, privately he was busy jabbing at his wife's uterus with coathangers -- and it is my conclusion based on the evidence presented here that he had apparently been doing so for years. It was a miracle she survived.
Sadly, even after his death, Hubbard's preoccupation with abortions has left a tragic, brutal, and bloody legacy. Women who become pregnant while serving in the Sea Org are told that the Church cannot afford to raise children. They are either forced to give their children up for adoption, or are coerced into having an abortion. From Mary Tabayoyon's sworn affidavit:
" While at the base, I knew of several instances of staff getting pregnant and being coerced to get an abortion."
" I told the Medical Officer (Martine Collins) of my pregnancy. She immediately went into action to arrange for my abortion. She told me, that I would naturally be expected to pay for it myself, since it was considered Out Ethics to get pregnant."
" A friend of mine, Betty Hardin, who works in the treasury division of Golden Era Productions, told me that she used to transport the pregnant women at the base to Riverside, California for their abortions. For about a year, she transported women almost weekly to the Planned Parenthood Center, in Riverside, so that they could have their abortions and follow up check ups that were needed. She said it just became routine. Pregnant Sea Org members were sent to the Planned Parenthood Center to get their abortions. When they returned to the base they went to Ethics."
Mary Tabayoyon then goes on to describe TEN instances where women working for Scientology were coerced, if not forced, to get abortions.

Hubbard Jr: Not to me. But he beat up a lot of women very badly. Blood, black eyes, busted teeth, the whole thing. He beat the holy hell out of women. His rages were incredible. I've read reports of the kinds of rages Hitler used to have, and they sound just like my father's. He was especially touchy about food. He would always have somebody else at the table sample everything on the table before he'd eat it. I've seen him pick up an entire dinner table and throw it against the wall if he didn't like the food or thought it was suspicious. He got very strange in the fifties. He had to have his clothes washed and washed and washed. He would take showers half a dozen times a day. I have often wondered if all of this might have been caused by the massive amounts of drugs and medication he took.

Ron Jr. states in a sworn affidavit:
"I have personal knowledge that my father regularly used illegal drugs including amphetamines, barbiturates and hallucinogens. He regularly used cocaine, peyote, and mescaline." [Hubbard recommends as a "good book" Aldous Huxley's "Doors of Perception" in his "Operational Bulletin no. 17" of Feb '56. This work of Huxley's deals with his experiences while experimenting with mescaline.]
According to statements made by attorney Michael Flynn, Hubbard, until at least February of 1980, filled out fraudulent "doctor's" prescriptions for a large array of medical drugs for himself.
And while the Church has sued attorney Michael Flynn more than a dozen times based on various accusations including libel (all of which suits have been dismissed to date), they have never mentioned Flynn's allegations regarding Hubbard's "illegal self-medication" in any of these suits.
Other statements to the effect of massive self-medication are by Gerry Armstrong (who was a witness to Hubbard's diary and other documents), Sara Northrup Hubbard, and John McMaster, all of whom I interviewed.
Sara Hubbard explained that Hubbard was "self-medicated," but that during the five years they were married, she know of no instances when he used "street drugs."
Armstrong told me, among other things, of a letter from Hubbard to his third wife Mary Sue when Hubbard was in Las Palmas during 1967 at the inception of the Sea Org. This letter is now in the custody of the court. In it, Hubbard tells his wife: "I'm drinking lots of rum and popping pinks and greys." [I'm told that "uppers and downers" are sometimes referred to as "pinks and greys."]
John McMasters told me that on the flagship "Apollo" in the late sixties, he witnessed Hubbard's drug supply. "It was the largest drug chest I had ever seen. He had everything!"
It was shown in the Armstrong trial in Los Angeles in 1984 that Hubbard even had blank prescription slips from the U.S. Navy, one of which had a prescription for phenobarbital (a barbiturate and hypnotic) written in Hubbard's handwriting.
Also, in the Armstrong trial where the "Affirmations" were introduced, a letter by Hubbard to his first wife was revealed, the last sentence of which declared: "I do love you, even if I used to be an opium addict."

The Church of Scientology's ultimate goal is to take over and rule the world according to Scientology principles. It sounds fantastic but Hubbard spoke of it frequently in his writings and lectures. Individually, some of the following quotes can be waved off as bluster or interpreted in a neutral or benign manner; however, taken together, they indicate Hubbard clearly wanted to "dispose of them quietly and without sorrow". His attitude towards those who would not accept Scientology is quite obviously hostile.
Perhaps at some distant date only the unaberrated person will be granted civil rights before law. Perhaps the goal will be reached at some future time when only the unaberrated person can attain to and benefit from citizenship. These are desirable goals...

From Dianetics, Book 2 , page 120:
"The sexual pervert (and by this term Dianetics, to be brief, includes any and all forms of deviation in dynamic two such as homosexuality, lesbianism, sexual sadism, etc., and all down the catalog of Ellis and Krafft-Ebing) is actually quite ill physically."
The term "dynamic two" within Dianetics normally refers to the human urge to procreate. Ellis and Krafft-Ebing were two early researchers into human sexuality.
From Science of Survival: Prediction of Human Behavior, Book One, Chapter 18, Page 116:
"At 1.1 on the tone scale, we enter the area of the most vicious reversal of the second dynamic. Here we have promiscuity, perversion, sadism and irregular practices."
In Book One, Chapter 27, Page 163:
"From 1.3 down to 0.6 we have the general area of the subversive, who promises a people freedom and equality and gives them a slaughter of their best minds and cultural institutions, to the end of a totalitarian dominance."
Page 89-90:
"Such people should be taken from the society as rapidly as possible and uniformly institutionalized; for here is the level of the contagion of immorality, and the destruction of ethics...No social order which desires to survive dates overlook its stratum 1.1's. No social order will survive which does not remove these people from its midst."
So, Hubbard believe that Homosexuals should be either audited to raise them above 1.1, or quarantined. If this fails, Hubbard offers up the following, FINAL SOLUTION (from Science of Survival):
"The reasonable man quite ordinarily overlooks the fact that people from 2.0 down have no traffic with reason and cannot be reasoned with as one would reason with a 3.0. There are only two answers for the handling of people from 2.0 down on the tone scale, neither one of which has anything to do with reasoning with them or listening to their justification of their acts. The first is to raise them on the tone scale by un-enturbulating some of their theta by any one of the three valid processes. The other is to dispose of them quietly and without sorrow."

The following is an extract that shows how pathetic Hubbard was when it came to paying women for sex. While that of itself may not have been cause for concern to most human beings, for Hubbard it was a very emotionally destructive issue: he continued to obsess and fixate on his whore mongering throughout his life. The following are brief extracts from Hubbard's diary and his self-hypnotic affirmations. Also included is a brief biography of Hubbard that relates his "sexploits" with his friend's lover (Sara Northrup), whom he later had a bigamist marriage with.
Quoting L. Ron Hubbard:
In 1942 - December 17th or thereabouts - while training in Miami, Florida, I met a girl named Ginger who excited me. She was a very loose person but pretended a great love for me. From her I received an infection of gonnohorea (sp?). I was terrified by it, the consequences of being discovered by my wife, the navy, my friends. I went to a private doctor who treated me with sulfa-thiazole and so forth. I thought I was cured but on a plane headed to Portland, Ore. I found I was not. I took to dosing myself with sulfa in such quantities that I was afraid I had affected my brain. My wife came to Portland. I took what precautions I could. I think actually that the disease was utterly cured very early. This fear further depressed my libido. My wife disliked the act anyway, I believe, even after she had a hysterectomy in 1938. (She was always terrified of childbirth but conceived despite all precautions seven times in five years resulting in five abortions and two children. I am quite fond of my children but my wife always tried to convince me that I hated them.)
I carried this fear of the disease [gonnohorea] to sea with me. I was reprimanded in San Diego in mid-43 for firing on the Mexican coast and was removed from command of my ship. This on top of having sunk two Jap subs without credit, the way my crew lied for me at the Court of Inquiry, the insults of the High Command, all combined to put me in the hospital with ulcers.
I returned to sea as navigator of a large ship and was subsequently selected for the Military Government School at Princeton whither I went in 1944-45 for three months. During my Princeton sojourn I was very tired and harrassed (sp?) and spent week-ends with a writer friend in Philadelphia. He almost forced me to sleep with his wife. Meanwhile I had a affair with a woman named Ferne. Somehow, perhaps because I had constantly wet feet and no sleep at Princeton, I contracted a staphloceus infection. I mistook it for gonnhorea and until I arrived at Monterey, believed my old illness had returned. I consulted a doctor there who reassured me. This affair again depressed my libido. The staphloceus infection has not entirely vanished, appearing as rheumatism which only small doses of stilbestrol will remove. The hormone further reduces my libido and I am nearly impotent. L. John Whiteside Parsons, usually known as Jack, first met Hubbard at a party in August 1945. When his terminal leave from the US Navy began, on Dec 6th, 1945, Hubbard went straight to Parsons' house in Pasadena, and took up residence in a trailer in the yard. Parsons was a young chemist who had helped set up Jet Propulsion Laboratories and was one of the innovators of solid fuel for rockets. Parsons was besotted with Crowley's Sex Magick, and had recently become head of the Agape Lodge of the Church of Thelema in Los Angeles. The Agape Lodge was an aspect of the Ordo Templi Orientis, the small international group headed by Aleister Crowley.
Parsons' girlfriend (Sara Northrup) soon transferred her affection to Hubbard. With her, Hubbard and Parsons formed a business partnership, as a consequence of which Parsons lost most of his money to Hubbard. However, before Hubbard ran away with the loot, he and Parsons participated in magical rituals which have received great attention among contemporary practitioners.
Parsons and Hubbard together performed their own version of the secret eighth degree ritual (17) of the Ordo Templi Orientiis in January 1946. The ritual is called "concerning the secret marriage of gods with men" or "the magical masturbation" and is usually a homosexual ritual. The purpose of this ritual was to attract a women willing to participate in the next stage of Hubbard and Parsons' Sex Magick.
Hubbard and Parsons were attempting the most daring magical feat imaginable. They were trying to incarnate the Scarlet Woman described in the Book of Revelation as "Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlot and Abominations of the Earth...drunken with the blood of saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." (18). During the rituals, Parsons described Babalon as "mother of anarchy and abominations." The woman who they believed had answered their call, Majorie Cameron, joined in with their sexual rituals in March 1946.
Parsons used a recording machine to keep a record of his ceremonies. He also kept Crowley informed by letter. The correspondence still exists. Crowley wrote to his deputy in New York "I get fairly frantic when I contemplate the idiocy of these louts."
