When I was being deposed by Ava Paquette for the Raul Lopez case, she of course grilled me about whether I had been in contact with critics of Scientology.
She went through a long list of names, asking whether I had had contact with any of them. (This reminded me so much of the McCarthy hearings.) Each time I acknowledged that I had been in communication with a given person, she then asked me to detail the specifics of every communication I had had with that person, including the last time I had spoken with him/her.
I identified this right away as a fishing expedition for information that might be used somehow against CoS critics. But it didn't occur to me that she might actually have been trying to impeach my testimony. In retrospect, I'll bet that she had my phone records and was checking to see whether I would acknowledge my phone communication with "the enemy," in hopes that I would give false or inaccurate information and then, if the case had gone to trial, she could have impugned my testimony on the stand.
Sorry, Ava, nice try....
