A friend of mine suffers from borderline personality disorder (BPD), considered by medical practitioners to be a severe mental illness and also defined as such in the DSM IV. In August of 2003 he experienced an episode of dysphoria (a condition where every painful emotion is felt at once), during which he quit a very lucrative job, divorced his wife of 22 years, and "ran" to IN. in an attempt to escape his emotional pain. When that didn't alleviate his pain he attempted suicide.

A Scientologist in IN took advantage of this and immediately began subjecting him to tactics of coercive persuasion (my friend confided in me before all communication with him was cut off that he had no privacy because his personal belongings were routinely searched when he was not present.)

I reported my friend as an endangered adult to Adult Protective Services who sent 2 Sheriff's Deputies to my friend's residence to investigate. They reported back that he looked OK to them and that he had stated that he just wanted to be left alone by me. Upon hearing this, the case manager promptly determined that my report was unwarranted and disregarded all of the information that I had provided her with, which included a professional opinion by a BPD expert regarding my friend's condition. Basing her decision solely on the observation of 2 deputies who were only required to take a 6 hour course in dealing with mentally ill people who are in crisis and posing an immediate threat to themselves or others and the statement of an individual (my friend) who is delusional and actively dissociating from his past and distorting reality, determined that my friend is not endangered and is just exercising his right to live his life the best way that he sees fit.

Everyone thinks that they are protecting my friends rights when, in reality, they are allowing him to be stripped of those very rights. Since when is it anyone's right to rob someone else of their rights?

If a man in a wheelchair was mugged and pushed into a ditch, no one in their right mind would conclude that the man was simply exercising his right to sit in the ditch. They would realize that he was in the ditch because his condition prevented him from being able to protect himself and is further preventing him from being able to get out of the ditch. My friend's situation is no different.

My friend continues to be subjected to coercive mind control tactics which can cause irreparable psychological injury in addition to "auditing" which can cause an abreaction by bringing repressed memories to conscious awareness that he may not be ready to deal with yet which will most likely illicit a suicidal or homicidal response.

The Scientologist in question is presently under investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for mail theft and obstruction of correspondence as well as the IN Attorney General for practicing hypnotherapy as well as providing pastoral counseling without the required credentialing or licensure.

I even attempted to report him to the CofS for being in violation of the "Auditor's Code" for having sexual relations with my friend as well as allowing a "being who is insane" to practice scientology. The CofS doesn't seem to care, which begs the question how they can expect others to take them seriously when they don't even take themselves seriously.

Adult Protective Services actually did more harm than if they would have done nothing by further validating my friend's delusion, and now they refuse to return my phone calls or respond to my emails. I've contacted the Tippecanoe Co. Prosecuting Attorney, who promised to look into the matter, and I'm waiting for a response from the Lt. Governor of IN. It looks as if I'm going to have to pursue civil litigation in order to get anyone to take this matter seriously and to do something to help my friend.

Any suggestions?=A0

It is very difficult to get any authorities to take any kind of action when the person in question is "an adult", who is, for all extents and purposes, (or appears to be) sane and making his/her own decisions.

Does this person have any family .....mother, father, sister, brother, children.....who could/would intervene in some way?
