Oh dear. Another Church of Scientology publication. A bit of background here: the Church of Scientology has published a deeply tendentious work called "Psychiatrists: The Men Behind Hitler". This claims that Hitler's rise and genocidal activities were promoted and coordinated by (surprise surprise) a hidden psychiatric conspiracy.

Somehow, 50 years of conventional scholarship on the Nazi era has missed this entirely.

A further bit of background: this curious theory was, as you might have guessed by now, the brainchild of the increasingly demented L. Ron Hubbard. He believed for many years that Scientology and he personally were the targets of a Soviet conspiracy masterminded through international psychiatric organisations such as the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) and Britain's National Association of Mental Health (NAMH). At the start of the 1970s, however, he changed his mind about who was behind the "global psychiatric conspiracy".

On 6 May 1971, he issued a secret "Guardian Order" to his personal intelligence agency, the Church of Scientology Guardian's Office, informing them of his latest discovery. In GO 060571 LRH, "Working Theory", he claims that the supposed psychiatric conspiracy was in fact being organised by Nazis. This Guardian Order seems to have been the origin for the theory currently being peddled by Scientology that Hitler was a psychiatric stooge:

"Brilliant work in tracing the origins of the WFMH disclosed it and the NAMH to have NAZI origins. Goerings Cousin, Villinger, others others others [sic] were at the root of Naziism [sic] in Germany and brought Hitler to power! They started the death camps and they not Hitler ordered the extermination of Jews.

Racial purity, genes, Man is an animal, etc were originated (and still held to) by this psychiatric group.

In 1936 they dominated the Beers organization (NAMH).

In 1948, fleeing before war criminal hunts, these people formed the WFMH in _London_.

We were fooled into thinking it was Communistic because they also penetrated Russia. Pavlov was one of them! (Trained at the University of Leipzig.)

We thought it went Russia to West. Actually that is because it went Nazi to Russia and Nazi to West. Both Russia and the West are internally dominated in the field of psychiatry by the original Nazis.

So it could look as though it were coming in from Russia.

The third party [Scientology jargon for agent provocateur] between East and West could be the Neo Nazi! ...

NEW WORKING HYPOTHESIS Apparently there exists somewhere a Nazi Memorial or plans to conquer the world.

By intelligence infiltration of governments, drug addiction and dependency and using psychiatry to eliminate political undesireables [sic] and minorities, a group is bent on world political domination."

The authenticity of this document is not in question as, according to e- mails from the Religious Technology Center (the controlling body of the Church of Scientology) it is an "unpublished work of L. Ron Hubbard".

It is amongst several thousand internal Scientology documents released by the FBI in 1979 following the criminal conviction of the leaders of the Guardian's Office.

Scientologists would no doubt take all of Hubbard's claims as unimpeachable truth. Non-Scientologists - and I have shown this document to several for their comments - have so far universally said that it is completely barking mad. These claims by me@me.net (Scientologist) and Mike McKean Sr (Scientologist) should be taken with an ocean's worth of salt.
