Letters to the Editor St. Petersburg Times August 8th, 2000 Scientology is not an asset with negativity, bad press Re: Scientology an asset to Clearwater, July 31 letter.
How can anyone (member or not) say that Scientology is an asset to Clearwater? When any group causes constant bad press and negativity to any area, it's not an asset. I believe the Clearwater downtown redevelopment referendum failed because most voters feared they'd be fixing up the downtown area for the Church of Scientology and its members and not for the betterment of those of us who actually live and work here in Clearwater. We weren't giving the city away when we planned to have it redeveloped; we only wanted it improved so we could all enjoy living and shopping here.
How can anyone compare Scientology with a law school, which the letter writer says Tampa is willing to pay $12-million to have in its area?
