"Scientology 'Church'" Ministers have to report for draft
Berlin, Germany

Berlin. (AP) Adherents of the "Scientology
Church," according to a decision by the Federal
Administration Court in Berlin, also have to do
military service in the Defense Forces, even if they
are employed inside their own community as
clergy. With this decision, the federal court
dismissed the complaint of a 28-year-old man who
wanted to be exempt from military service because
he aspired to the position of Scientology minister.
In the basis the judge supported his decision on a 1982 judgment from the Darmstadt Administrative Court in which it was said that "Scientology" was not a religious denomination. As a result, neither could there be a religious office such as those of the major churches. Instead, "Scientology" was more of a "philosophical community" for which religion made only a "fringe appearance," stressed the Darmstadt judge.
