>p> --------------------------------------------------- Activities of Tigger between April 30 and May 6:
1. Notified Dr. Ed Lottick, whose son, Noah, jumped to his death clutching the only money COS had not stolen from him (TIME, May 6, 1991 SCIENTOLOGY, THE THRIVING CULT OF GREED AND POWER.)
Dr. Lottick wrote a letter to George Nigh, former Oklahoma governor and President of the Univ. of Central Oklahoma.
2. Contacted Bob Penny at Factnet, who got the news out on the then (I think) only internet anti-scientology group.
3. Notified other Oklahomans.
4. Called the University of Central Oklahoma.
5. Paid $65 to rent space, table, TV/VCR for May 6.
6. May 6, 1995
My one and only, lonely picket.
Grey day, torrential rain.
About 9:30 a.m. Arrive at the university.
Several men in dress slacks, white shirts and ties with walkie talkies are outside under a canopy. My one question about security elicits laughter and confirms they are scientologists.
My rented table is on the first floor, away from the front door and stairs. But it is in front of the elevators. I set up shop. A woman comes over and asks me why I am there. I say something about freedom of speech and Scientology. She gives me the evil scieno stare and walks off.
Since I am the one and only "picketer" little attention is paid to me.
Workshop attendees have a two-person escort up the stairs, avoiding the elevators. (I only count about ten attendees and one of them was Dr.
Larry Nieman, a veterinarian, who I knew to be a scientologist.)
I shout up the stairs, "Hi, Dr. Nieman, how are you today." He turns, with a look of pleasant surprise on his face which turns to puzzled surpise as he says "Fibe" and two scienos hussle him up the rest of the stairs.
I walk over to the bottom of the stairs and tell every new arrival whom the scienos rush past me and up the stairs, "I have information about Dianetics amd Scientology and point at my table. A male scieno, when there are no guests in sight, and I have a short discussion. But I don't go away from the stairs until the arrivals stop. At one point, a friendly female scieno approaches and tries to engage me in a conversation about personal information. I just tell her I have a relative in Scientology and decine to tell her who this person is and that she might know.
She goes away.
I go up the stairs and ask for some literature. I am told, "We don't have any to give you."
I return to my post, but I am not alone.
Two and sometimes three scienos stand in front of their big sign to make sure I don't harass any of their guests. A young man walks in and over to my table before a scieno can grab him. He looks with interest at my table of materials and says, "Oh, you've read Dianetics". He tells me he is from Texas. A female Scieno rushes over, grabs him by the arm, calls him by name and rushes him up the stairs, with the admonition.
"You are late. You must hurry up stairs.
"i want to run after him and drag him back to my table to read about the real Scientology, but I know I can not.
The scienos remain at their post until I leave at 4 p.m. I sit there playing the part of NIGHTLINE's "An Interview with David Miscavige" over and over ad over again and read some of my own materials. I eat an apple for lunch. Other scienos relieve the guards so they can partake of the free lunch upstairs. I am hungry and discouraged.
A couple of students walk by and sit and watch some of the video. They say that it's the week before finals and the Student Union is off limits so students will study. They leave.
I look up and notice the three scienos, two women, one man looking down the hall at me. The man is holding something up, pointing it at me. I roll my chair back behind the TV. When I peek out, their backs are turned. Was it a camera? I don't know.
The guards take turns, but no one else comes down the stairs before I must leave at 4 p.m.
Was my one and only, lonely picket effective in any way. I will never know, but I take great pleasure in knowing that I tried to do something.
