In addition to the underground "blast resistant" vault / hideout the Scientology organization maintains in Trementia P O, New Mexico, there's another somewhat large facility just two kilometers or so North West of Petrolia, California.
This is a good overview of the entire region. There are limited points of egress and no discernable airfields that would make this area rather unsuitable as a hideout. Highway 101 to the West could be easily shut down by a few police officers and the Old Mattole Road could be blocked off to the North and South of the cult's facility easily enough, it seems to me. Hoofing it overland while on the run is possible except that thermal tracking from a helicopter against the land being cooled by the breeze in from the Pacific Ocean would make spotting running fugitives rather easy, I'd suspect. Not a good place to hide Heber Jentzsch.
Here's what the town of Petrolia itself looks like. The Old Mattole Road heads off North West just as you leave town. There's a photograph of the small section of road just before the syndicate's property later on in this series.
Here's the actual "residential" complex just about two kilometers up the hill from Petrolia proper. The dirt road leading North East actually loops around back North West -- which is shown in another photograph.
I'm not sure what exactly this is. It looks like an excavation that's been covered over. It swamped the CCD camera a bit so we get some of the blurring. There didn't appear to be any dirt road leading to this object so I'm unsure what it might be. If it's a water tank, it's damn massive. Since any shadow is washed out, getting a feel for how tall it is -- if it's a water tank -- is impossible.
To the North East of the syndicate's "residential" compound there is this. Four large buildings, five smaller buildings. Four and perhaps maybe five vehicles showing. I don't think this is part of the cult's property yet it may be.
Driving about another two kilometers North West along the Old Mattole Road we come to this area, farm to the North East, perhaps four residential areas. Notice that along the dirt road leading to the large residential area with the large plot of tilled soil there's a structure that might be a guardhouse. I kind of doubt it because it looks like there might be a grain silos at that residence -- either that else it's a very large house. It throws a considerable shadow.
Here's a better view showing more area to the North of the cult's main "residential" facility. As you can see, the road leading North East loops around back to the West and meats up again with the main dirt road. You can also get a feel for the size of the syndicate's main house. You can store a lot of fugitives in the upper rooms while also having tens of thousands of firearms and millions of rounds of ammunition stored in the lower floors of the facility.
This overview pulls the camera back a bit and to the North West of the facility to show the two main points of egress. It's nice country. Too bad organized crime moved in.
After stopping for ice and soda in Petrolia, here's the length of road leading up to the syndicate's facility.
A view of the area South West of the syndicate's main house. There's signs of volcanic ridges which makes me wonder whether there are natural lava tubes and caverns in the area.
Here's a topological map of the overall region with Petrolia to the North center of the whole map, giving something of an expanded look of what the topology of the areas South of Petrolia are like.
We take a zoom in on the township of Petrolia here on this close up topological map. There does appear to be fresh water wells dug in the area which makes me think that the unidentified, high Lambda object in a previous photograph isn't a large water tank. The Old Mattole Road which peels off to the North West is indicated nicely.
Here's a close up topological map of the Scientology organization's main "residential" facility. Probably the most interesting aspects of these topological maps are the fact that this isn't very leg breaking ground anywhere around here. Fugitives could escape from the facility overland, it seems like, if it's daylight or maybe at night during the summer months.
Finally here's a topological map showing where Petrolia, the cult's bunker / hideout, and the Pacific Ocean all fit together.
