At our usual lunch spot, 7 of us gathered before picketing. Also, a woman sat at the table next to ours, who turned out to be the woman who videotaped us while we were picketing later on. Don't all religions spy on their critics?
We picketed the Big Blue building for a couple of hours in the afternoon as the Scientologists were preparing to celebrate 20 years of something (the banners didn't say what) that would clear the planet. Andreas was being interviewed by the Scientologists on the Sunset Blvd. end of L. Ron Hubbard Way, but I kept picketing up and down the street so I don't know how that went. It was a pretty uneventful picket otherwise, except that a few Scientologists actually talked to me a little.
Then we went to the Hubbard Life Exhibit and picketed for an hour or so. This was good as we had some nice conversations with passersby and handed out some flyers. The Scientologists were desperately trying to drag passersby in to take the tour. One of the Scientology PR people asked for a flyer which I gave her. She then a little later asked for another. I said "no, read the first one."
About 7pm we went to L. Ron Hubbard Way again to see how the event was going. I think they had maybe 1500 chairs set up outside for the event, and by the time we left maybe half or more were filled. The big sign out front said "all invited."
Right when we got there and were crossing the street, a cop crossed the street toward us to tell us "they have a street permit" so we couldn't use L. Ron Hubbard Way. I suggested that a street permit doesn't really close the sidewalk, so then the cop said it was a movie permit. Mark asked to see the permit. They said sure, but we never did see it.
We went around the block and picketed on Sunset Blvd and L. Ron Hubbard Way. It was reasonably uneventful except Mark kept asking the cops to explain more precisely why we couldn't use L. Ron Hubbard Way sidewalks.
Nice party afterwards, then I went home.

Fascinating, so they really are making the buildings look good.

Subject: My LA Picket Report
Date: Wed, 29 Sep 2004 01:02:31 -0700
Message-ID: <415a5e16@news2.lightlink.com>
In honor of Andreas coming to LA, we decided to have a picket. For me, it was amazing that I was out with such "big, bad SP's"...........and now I was one of them...and SO happy!
Although we were a rather small group, we were a hot group of SP's! We had
Andreas, Graham Berry, Mark Bunker, Chris L, Jeff Jacobson, Phil Scott, and
me.
We started out at the Complex, as Andreas and I had driven by there the
night before and saw they were setting up for some event. It was a Saturday,
but as usual of late, it was dead as a doornail.
Oh sure, there were maybe 20 people all in all outside in the 2 hours we
were there..........but 20 people in 2 HOURS???? (I actually think it was
less, but being generous, that was it).
My old colleague who I turned the Scientology Parishioner's League over to,
Joel Phillips, arrived to get Andreas debating and keep him at one end of
the complex.
That used to be a common plan for OSA>>>>>>>>>>>...get them down the street
so the public cannot see their signs, and then talk with them, so they won't
be moving.
Andreas did a terrific job of talking with Joel, and I'll be quite surprised
if deep in his heart he isn't thinking about not only the many things
Andreas said, but the way in which he said them.
Finally around 3 we decided to head over to the HGB. That's always fun, as
there I use the "Honk if you think Scientology is a Cult" sign, and people
were honking away. Again, Joel arrived to interview Andreas, and each time,
Mark Bunker got the entire interview on tape.
The L. Ron Hubbard Life Exposition is right next to the HGB (The building
where the Executives of Scientology Management are). At the Life Expo
they're trying to rope people in. So as they'd pass out tickets, I'd say,
"Find out both sides. Here are some Web sites to study up, telling you the
other side".
The Sea Org girl would always say, "Oh...........she's crazy". I'd say,
"really? Well............the fact is I was in there for 30 years, now I'm
out and although I can now read ~all~ of what is there, she can only read
her side. She cannot read those sites I've given you. You decide who's
crazy". They'd all smile at me, say thanks...and leave.
We got out many cards with Web sites on them, and got many honks from people
driving by. Sometimes there was an entire stream of honks. Also, people
walking by did the "honk, honk". :)
A few people came up who requested we invite them the next picket we have, as they are SO passionate about exposing this Con. We took their names and #'s.
We all left to relax before the bit Clambake party # 1.
Sorry this isn't longer, but Phil already wrote his, and I need to go to
bed. It's been a great few days!
