There are many here who have claimed that the purif is nothing more than a way to break a
person down physically to get that person to accept Scn'gy more. I seriously doubt this is
the case. The people taking the purif are public members, a great deal of them very young
and physically healthy. They can endure the 5 hours of sauna quite easily, and, really,
it's one of the few things that a person can do that's social in Scn'gy. If anything, it's
the least manipulative of all the processes.
Besides spending too much time in the sauna and all those damn vitamins, you have to run every day while on it. It's actually quite invigorating. The problem comes because of the extremity involved. It is like everything else in Scn'gy. After hours of auditing or TRs or studying, there is a kind of daze that you get into, a semi hypnotic state no doubt. It is defined as a positive state and many view it as such, including myself when I was in.
After I came out of the purif there *was* a cleanliness I felt. What else are you supposed to feel? I have spent time in hot baths and gyms for hours too, and the feeling is almost the same. It's *almost* the same. In the latter there isn't as much hype and "cogs" to think you are re-creating the world.
If anything, the purif makes one feel better about yourself just because you have goals, you are eating better -- you have to -- you are taking mega vitamins, which may account for some of the highs people go through, you are exercising and you are socializing with other members who agree with you.
When I came out of the purif I would look at the colors of things, like the sky or any of the immediate environment, and see it differently. I saw it not through my own eyes unblemished, unfortunately. The constant nagging of Hubbard's evaluations why these things happened were believed by me. I thought I was cleansing the body, but in fact I was going through a marathon of sorts that eventually lead to great pleasure and a different perspective after I was done.
Go to the gym for a day, or a hot bath for hours and see if you don't feel a "cleaned"
type feeling. You do in fact. It's an adrenaline rush, mostly.
The purif is about is it brings in a great deal of easy cash for Scn'gy orgs. This may be the one thing that keeps most of these orgs going. When I paid it was around $1200 for the purif only. The damn bastards *then* have you buy the books and then pay for each weeks vitamins. I hear it's double that or more now.
The purif makes you feel better because it's the first time most people are working out regularly and eating regularly. It gives you an adrenaline rush that isn't too hard on the body physically. Yes, staying in a hot sauna is tough, but not as tough as, say, lifting for 4 hours. If people can't handle the 5 hours in the Sauna they could easily stay in as little as 3 hours if they complained. I wouldn't know if anyone has ever complained, but I know it's possible.
It also makes sure you are around Scn'gy for at least three weeks to a month. While spending 5 hours a day there and working your regular job, you don't have time for much else.
I think most put too much emphasis on the manipulation of Hubbard's ways. Not everything
in Scn'gy is the devils work, even if it did come from the devil himself. Remember, TRs
and things like the purif aren't done by every Scn'gst day in and day out. These are
pieces to the puzzle, which blinds some to believe that they are a larger part of the
puzzle than possible.
