Regarding the number of scientologists on the planet - in 1995 A highly placed friend at Gold told me "in confidence" that the IAS had only 65,000 members. Since every scientologist has to be a member of the IAS, including staff and raw public, I had her repeat the figures by asking:
"Are you saying there are only 65,000 scientologists on the planet?". She laughed knowingly and said: "DM deems it vital that the SP's never find out about these actual numbers"
I'd prefer to die speaking my mind than live fearing to speak.
The only thing that always works in scientology are its lawyers The internet is the liberty tree of the 90's http://www.lermanet.com - mentioned 4 January 2000 in The Washington Post's - 'Reliable Source' column re "Scientologist with no HEAD"

Data I have from another well placed source:
IAS membership as of December 1994:
Sea Org members: 3,400 (SO members hold a free membership) Lifetime members: 34,000 Yearly members: 54,000 To this you have to add the patrons and other honorary status holders.
Your friend was perhaps discounting those 'lifetime' members who are still on the books, are not known SPs but appear to have lost interest in scientology.

60,000 has been my best guess for some time now.
