Just saw a segment on Today (NBC morning news and commentary show)
about some volunteers who man a street corner past which many police
and firefighters pass to and from the disaster area. The volunteers,
all ages, people who wanted to help but couldn't do all the
traditional Red Cross and such stuff as the slots for volunteers were
filled, cheer on the firefighters and police as they go back and
forth. They hold signs and American flags and basically let the
people know, 24 hours a day, how much their work is appreciated. I
saw many firefighters heading home who stopped and said things such
as "This is the best part of our day" and "thanks for being here and
letting us know we are appreciated".
Not a yellow shirt among them. Not one.
