Letter: I resent church 'sales reps' Source: Birmingham Post; Birmingham (UK) Publication date: 2003-05-26 Arrival time: 2003-05-27
Sir, - An area of public space outside Baskerville House is currently occupied by promotional marquees belonging to an organisation called The Church of Scientology. The pretext under which they have been allowed to set up stall there is one thing; the irritation caused to me (and presumably others) by their helpers is another.
I generally have to walk from my office into town for business reasons at least once a day and my shortest route is past this area. If I feel moved (of my own free will) to divert into their tents, then fine.
What I strongly object to is my having to fend off the entreaties of their supporters stepping in front of me and brandishing their leaflets, not only outwards but on my return as well.
I often have to walk through St Philip's churchyard, past Birmingham Cathedral. If I feel moved to go in of my own accord and see what the Church of England has to offer, I can do so. What I don't have to face there is the Bishop and his 'sales reps' badgering me to do so.
