I want to add a couple of points for the benefit of
non-auditors here. Monica was much more of an auditor than I
ever was or probably could have been, BTW.
The "dirty needle" meter read can happen because the "tone arm
potentiometer" is worn or dirty. This means that when you move
the tone arm knob, there are particles of grit where the
surfaces touch, so you get an irregular, dirty sort of needle
movement. It's like with an old radio where when you turn the
tuning knob, the tuning doesn't move evenly and smoothly but
advances erratically. Any e-meter that is used a lot will need
to have the "TA pot" replaced fairly often or the "dirty
needles" will interfere with showing the real meter activity.
A "real" dirty needle, not caused by mechanical factors like
grit in the TA pot, can and does happen when the auditor's TRs
are rough or communication cycles are bad, interruptive, etc. A
"real" dirty needle indicates that the PC is not in session but
has his attention on the auditor because the auditor's way of
communication is not comfortable and natural. One of the
e-meter drills that auditors do is to have a coach on the meter
and to alternately "dirty" and "clean" the needle's movement by
using certain bad and unnantural communication styles, which
dirties the needle, and then having the coach talk about the
bad communication, which will clean the needle.
The "rock slam" read can be caused by mechanical factors such
as PC touching the cans together, wearing rings which touch the
cans, or bad connections in the wires or in the meter. A Rock
Slam is a violent slamming of the needle back and forth as if a
switch somewhere was rapidly alternating between on and off,
but not rhythmically or regularly. Real R/Ses are associated
with something not merely bad, but seriously evil, with respect
to the values or morals of one's group. Real R/Ses are not
common, especially at the lower levels of auditing.
I saw the R/S only once, with a PC who was running R3R
Dianetics. She was a good PC and could run that procedure well
and reliably. One day she had a somatic "pain under my chin"
which led into a whole chain of incidents where she was bitten
by vampires in past lives a couple of thousand years ago in
eastern Europe. On flow 2, which is where one was the
perpetrator rather than the victim, she got a few incidents,
then in going earlier, she was totally still and quiet for five
minutes and you could have heard a pin drop. Then a wild R/S
happened for maybe ten seconds as she located the basic
incident on the chain. The R/S recurred four more times as she
ran through the incident and each time the phenomenon was
shorter and weaker, and the incident and chain erased with
usual good "end phenomena".
The tech of Expanded Dianetics was the hot new thing in 1972
and 1973. It was an attempt to systematically handle the "Evil
Purposes" which some PCs have, generally very well buried,
going back to far distant past lives and places. Evil Purposes
don't necessarily have anything to with LRH or Scientology or
the like. If "Ev Purps" could be run by a good auditor properly
using the XDN tech, the PC would benefit greatly. But the tech
was pretty complex and given the insanity of Flag and Scn's
organization, XDN bogged down and dropped out of sight after a
couple of years -- and quite possibly because LRH might have
had his own Evil Purposes restimulated.
When all those people were wrongly labeled as R/Sers and sent
to the RPF in the late '70s, I would guess that what was
happening was that LRH (being increasingly paranoid and insane)
was going along with a large-scale outness in the tech whereby
dirty needles were being regarded as R/Ses. The reasoning was
that the dirty needle is a miniaturized version of the R/S;
after all the needle jerks erratically, and presumably if you
could amplify a dirty needle read enough with a very sensitive
meter movement the DN might become an R/S. I imagine that there
was widespread neglect of e-meter maintenance and repair, which
few people were trained in and those few people tended to be
more geeky eccentrics than the Sea Orgers. So all the outnesses
conveniently provided a justification for wholesale abuse via
RPFing.
