You seem to be missing the point here. In an uncharacteristic lapse into rationality and sanity, the 'Church' of Scientology seems to recognize the absuridity of 'postulating' a *military* 'clearing' of the planet, and, despite its para-para-military structure, seems to avoid the worst excesses of its megalomania in *that* direction.

Extortion on the other hand is an integral part of the Cult toolkit. Post Waco, it seems reaasonable to assume that the Cult is well aware of the ultimate futility of attempting to 'defend' even a well armed known 'compound' against even a minimal application of government force.

Admittedly, also post-Waco, the hurdle to actually launching a raid against even as blatantly criminal an organization as Scientology has risen exponentially, to the point where even a repeat of the LA or Clearwater raids, no matter how non-violent and successful and revealing those earlier raids were is completely improbable. It seems the protectors of the citizenry are loathe to actually protect as long as they can convince themselves that the damage caused to society and citizens is within 'acceptable' limits.

While I don't doubt that the 'masterminds' of Scientology are aware of such considerations, likewise, it would be completely out of character for such reassuring facts to completely assuage their Hubbard given paranoia.

While almost any weapon can be used for extortion, and I don't think there's any doubt that the Cult has plenty of conventional guns etc. stashed away, some weapons are not really effective weapons at all in the sense of defending against 'attack' directly. Stopping a raid on the Holy of Holies in Hemet with nukes, gas or guns is pretty obviously about as effective a notion as exercising OT powers to fry the invaders like cockroaches.

How much simpler to simply bury a 'dirty bomb', which has has practically no military value, in some helpful Scientologist's backyard in the Hollywood Hills, on the off chance that our governmental agencies might actually decide to do their duty and ask to inspect the place and its records. It's cheap, it's well within Scientology means, and it's completely in character; with the added cherry on top that it fits well into Cult dogma about Scientologist immunity to such woggy playthings.

If I can think of it, why wouldn't they?
