He had already been arrested for trespassing at the University of Buffalo, where he told police he was following instructions from the goddess Athena. Clearly the guy was nuts. They put him in the hospital, and his family, all good Scientologists, took active measures to prevent his receiving psychiatric care.

The Church of Scientology was not blind to the situation. Jeremy was so creepy that he had been banned from the Buffalo Org!
The day before she died, his mother called the Org asking for help, because she didn't know what else to do with him. The vitamin regimen she had him on wasn't working. He had been violent a few times before, and she was sometimes afraid of him.
The ED, Jeff Carlson (her son in law), told her to keep Jeremy busy with MEST work (manual labor).
You can read all these sordid details at PerkinsTragedy.org and BuffaloScientologyInfo.com.
Scientology hates these web sites. They want them removed. They tried all kinds of things to stop the Buffalo News from running its Scientology series by Mark Sommer, including the article exposing the circumstances of Elli Perkins' death. They even brought in OSA operatives. But they were unsuccessful.
Jeremy Perkins was tried for murder and found "not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect." That's a legal conclusion, not a moral one.
Kevin and Barb have different opinions about where moral responsibility lies in this case. I, and a lot of other folks, think Scientology bears at least some of the moral responsibility for Elli's death, because its promotes ideas about mental health that are scientifically invalid, irresponsible, and downright dangerous.
Kevin thinks Jeremy bears at least moral responsibility. Whether he does or not, he certainly doesn't bear ALL of it.
As the t-shirt says: "Scientology kills."
