As those who have visited the url in my sig file know, I have studied mass media in detail. One conclusion I've come to is that LRH technology is administered through the media. (see http://cisar.org/russia/020130e.htm for an exciting explantion of psychonarcotics - a term I coined to describe the Hubbard doctrines that numb your psyche.) All Scientology's courses are deliverd via Scientology's private media, for instance.
In my studies I've come across other aspects of the media that related to Scientology. The prospect of "brainwashing" and the newly arrived phenomenon of "Internet addiction," for instance. I'll make a comment about Internet addicts in this post.
Internet addicts have fewer inhibitions about the medium of the Internet that non-addicts. Their threshhold for personal involvement is much lower than "normal" people. It also happens that a key element for persuasive efforts (in brainwashing or advertising, for instance) is personal involvement. In other words, if the guy on TV wants to make money by selling you a car, who cares? But if the guy on TV can make you feel that a new car is going to make you powerful and sexy and admired by all who are graced by your presence, he's got you hooked.
My comment is that Internet addicts seem to have a higher tendency to get personally involved and thus assimilate thought patterns from unknown and hostile sources. It was with this in mind that I wrote a trial LRH Net-Nerd Hat. After reading it, I think if you ignore the LRH terminology, it would readily seem to fit many news groups besides alt.religion.scientology. I explain this by saying that many news groups are dominated by rightwing extremists, because they have a tendency to be more vocal than normal, shy people.
LRH Net-Nerd Hat
Over the course of the past month or so I have been trying to discover how various people managed to view a gift of $2 millions as treason, but, no surprise, have not been too successful. All was not lost, however.
Here's a very sketchy outline of the application of LRH tech to handle person-to-person opposition on the Internet. I'll call it an LRH Net-Nerd Hat, because Internet addicts who are not former Scientologists seem to be rather susceptible to it. On the other hand, so do closet Freezoners, i.e., those who believe in LRH without admitting to being Freezoners, who are not Internet addicts. It is an Internet hybrid of Scientology, and is subject to be superceded at any time by the "supreme test of a Thetan."
Coach promises that you will find the truth as stated in advance if you do as you are bidden.
Coach acts OT (curses and swears). (This and needless attacks are the "red flags" of control cults in general.)
Coach says you haven't understood the materials provided by a supposedly unquestionable authoritative or omniscient source.
Coach puts you in lower ethics condition (calls you names that are not allowed on prime time TV.)
Coach implies you want to destroy basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech (or even religion).
Coach lets you know that your questions mean you are part of the problem, or some other creative piece of logic, but that compliance equals forgiveness.
Coach advocates that opponents are sub-human and thus do not enjoy the basic civilities of life, such as an apology, (endorses the SP doctrine).
Coach tells you you're not high enough on the tone scale (too stupid) to understand and s/he will therefore have to leave.
Coach publicly departs, endorsing the disconnection doctrine.
To gain adherents, Coach blames some unrelated catastrophe on your non-compliance, thus endorsing incrimination.
A variation of this is to say that something good happened despite your non-compliance.
Coach modifies the advance truth given above as necessary to fit evidence.
Go to step 1.
The preceding patter stops at the instant acceptance or compliance is obtained.
The main effort to address the subject material is to trip you up or bullet-proof a future attack. The secondary effort is to establish credibility.
It works by getting a person, who misinterprets the coach's endless routine as determination, to cross a previously denied threshhold to "truth", which can of course be endlessly redefined. It appears that only one breach of personal limitation is sufficient, as that is an indication that the person is willing to ignore previously held tenets of conduct.
To have the above information washed from your brain, read "Dorian", who creates red-herring material to discourage the intellectual study of LRH tech.
