The other morning I got to thinking (yes, I know it can be dangerous) and I actually took inventory of exactly what effect the CofS has had on my life and environment ever since I left over a decade ago.
I had been in it for nearly 15 years, in the Sea Org, almost all my friends were SO members, everything I talked about, thought about and argued for was involved with Scientology.
Then, from one day to the next, it disappeared from my life.
Like a lot of ex-members I wanted to talk to and locate those other "exes" and I have hooked up with a few here and there, met some old firends, stayed in touch with some who are still in the SO (and wouldn't OSA just love to know who those people are - surprise surprise your sec checking doesn't actually work). But, in looking around the ONLY time I have even seen something about scientology it has either been a) bad PR or b) something I was looking for. There has not been one instance of anything outside of that.
And this is in many major urban settings where scientology is supposed to have a "presence".
I have yet to meet one person - just one - who has had anything positive to say about Scientology, Hubbard or even hubbard's science fiction.
I looked over the Sci Fi boards on AOL and saw the spamming that is being done there to try and convince people that Hubbard and BattleField Earth are a sci fi classic and I realized - just leave it to Scientologists! The members of the CofS are the seeds of its destruction/ Mike Mckean and Travisargent have done a great job of showing how moronic and "programmed" scientologists are. their mindless drivel and high, shrieking output just makes them look ludicrous. Until they leave the CofS, of course, they will never, for one moment believe that. But as the chances are very good that one of them will be out in the next year then maybe the one who is out will get a chance to review how he/she looked to the rest of the world.
The same on the Sci Fi boards - it seems bizarre to me that these people seem to have no understanding of what, what they are doing, looks like. It looks like a group of schoolchildren who have all been told to write something nice! Most ofit is stunningly unoriginal and vacuous.
I cannot judge how the last decade of scientology appears to outsiders compared to the decade before - I suspect that Scientology has faded even from what small shadow it could cast while Hubbard was alive.
My postings on ARS have become extremely sporadic over the last two years and I feel, to tell you the truth, that it is my one remaining connection to the warped little group that is the CofS - the only time I ever think of scientology or even wonder about it is when I stop by to check the newsgroup.
I will check back in once in a very great while and hope maybe an old friend is looking for a chat, but for the most part I have to say that the absolute best black propaganda against the CofS is its own people and its own actions not anything I can say or talk about. And its time for me to leave it all behind.
If, at some point in the future, another voice is needed to speak out against the CofS I will be around and will say my piece. But for now and for the forseable future - I wish everyone the best in their endeavors and hope that some Scientologists eventually get to realize how well and thoroughly they have been duped.
I am sure there is some word or phrase that describes the journey that a member of such a cult as Scientology goes through when they leave. I feel that I have finally reached the end of mine, I want to say a fond thanks to people like Jeff, Arnie, Tilman, Sten-Arne, Andreas, Dennis, Gerry. RVY, Bob Minton, Stacy, Mark, Diane, Monica, Jack Craver, warrior and many many others who contributed to ARS over the many years I have been reading and sometimes posting here. Some of you know how to get hold of me if you need a friend to talk to.
To McKean and Travis - one day you will be faced with the sad and humbling realization that you have made asses of yourselves at the behest of others. Some of the people that now feel are the worst of your enemies will actually turn out to be the only people who will stand by you when that time arrives.
I will be checking in for the next couple of days and then - 'Moff.
