Photographs 1 through 5 are of Soda Springs that can be reached by taking Zyzzyx Road off of Highway 15 West of Yermo which is West of Baker. Photograph 7 through 8 are of some of the instrumentation that has gone up.
This Soda Springs site was originally taken over by the U. S.
Calvary which "pacified" the Indians (read: came in and slaughtered any that could be found within 5 miles) and then I believe the U. S.
Army moved in to keep the water from being used by the Indians to deliberately force them to die of thirst. The "ownership" of the land bounced around a lot.
You might be able to see the fact that there's a fairly large pond just South of the little jetty that reaches out into the dry lake bed a bit. There's another pond closer to the camera's position but it's not visible from the altitude the picture was taken. There is a large solar panel array, the remains of a system of water trophs, the remains of electrical lines (local only) and a lot of rusted machines.
A cult set up shop here way back when; when the FDA actually took their job seriously and actually prosecuted quack medical frauds.
The soda springs were touted as something of a magical cure-all for a broad range of physical ailments, the operators got dinged by the Feds, so the crooks turned it into a religion, drew a deep breath, and proceeded to defraud the ignorant and the gullible with no reduction in revenued. Eventually the FDA came down on them again and I believe the IRS helped to put a stop to the scam. The fact that some of the crooks running the place apparently actually believed the scam they were selling was something the FDA and the IRS didn't seem to care too much about.
My how things have changed. These days the FDA has abdicated their charter completely and the IRS doesn't care what criminal organization racketeers its way into tax exemption status so long as blackmail and extortion, collaboration, collusion, and corruption keep the money flowing to the right pockets.
Not too long ago one used to be able to drive in to the Spring and invite oneself to dinner. I believe the BLM leased the property after the cult was thrown out and dismantled. The person who acquired the residency used to have an open door policy and one could drive in to the Springs and invite oneself to dinner -- bringing food and water to contribute was nice. I don't know when the resident stopped that open door policy but I believe it was when the forestry service took over the land. Now the BLM and forest service maintain a fairly well maintained facility and there's a hotel that's almost always entirely empty -- single story, single room with air conditioners and electric lights being run off of a gasoline power generator.
As a cult compound, this is a fairly good location since it's isolated.
There's no safe way to escape from the Feds or BATF, though, because the flatland you can see make fleeing "subjects" easy to spot day or night, and the mountains where I was climbing to take the pictures are foot-breaking and difficult. Flee to the left or the right along the base of the mountains and the cult leaders would run right into the rifles of the BATF. Underground hide-y-holes are also difficult because the water seeps. The only safe way for a cult leader to evade capture would be to take off over the lakebed in a vehicle but that would just delay things.
Photograph number 0 is nothing too important. Somewhere out there in that expanse is the brother of Xenu's Light House who was destroyed in the West Fork fire.
