"Why is it that scientology's biggest 'product' has been ex-scientologists? Think about it. For youself." -- ?

"I hate fascist and Nazist organisations and parties. As a liberal, it is my obvious duty to fight all racist, anti-democratic and anti-equality movements. I feel sick when I think about the scientology movement and its adherents. A manipulative cult that profiteers on people looking for a purpose in life. An organisation that celebrates elitism and rests on a foundation of undemocratic values." --- Margita Bjorklund

The important fact is that those who oppose Scientology on this newsgroup can't be generalized about in this way or honestly taken as a uniform group. The only thing they share in common is an opposition to Scientology as a criminal enterprise. There is no universal belief or universal hostility toward any ""religious"" faith. I see no signs of either coercion of belief or coercion of opinion.
Some here are ""religious"" in the conventional sense, some not. It makes very little difference. All critics here oppose a criminal organization and its practices. That is all that matters.
Many here have in fact expressed their beliefs. Some believe in god. Some believe in human rights. Some believe that L. Ron Hubbard was a loon. You must not have read any of those postings.
You are not merely painting with a broad brush. You are painting with a roller the width of Chris Farley's waistline.
There is indeed a great darkness here that is being exposed to the light of day. Nothing you do can stop the light of the truth from exposing the organization you're trying to protect. It is far too late for that. I hope that you, having been deeply touched by the darkness, see the light of the truth -- as others in your position have -- before you are swallowed by it. It is not the critics here who are harming people of good will. It is not critics who create hostility here.

As can be seen from Hubbard's writings, he defined those who disagree with him and with the aims of Scientology as criminal and antisocial. He seems to have thought that he was in a position to revoke the basic rights of these people. He is wrong in this. You are also wrong if you believe that others will tolerate such violation of human rights.
Faith in no way implies constructive or decent endeavours. Read up on the inquisition some time.

The critical arguments here are not about Scientology as a ""religion"". They are about the activities of Scientology as an organization. Belief does not matter to the Scientology organization. If it did, Scientology would not persecute Freezoners. Only money matters.

"Ignorance about Scientology can be embarrassing: two months ago, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, noting that Scientology's founder 'has solved the aberrations of the human mind,' proclaimed March 13 'L. Ron Hubbard Day.' He rescinded the proclamation in late March, once he Iearned who Hubbard really was." --- Time Magazine

The past 8 years have consisted mainly of a prolonged, and ultimatly unsuccessful, attempt to persuade or compel the plaintiff to comply with lawful discovery. These efforts have been fiercely resisted by plantiffs. They have utilized every device that we on the District Court have ever heard of to avoid such compliance, and some that are new to us.
This noncompliance has consisted of evasions, misrepresentations, broken promises and lies, but ultimately with refusal. As part of this scheme to not comply, the plaintiffs have undertaken a massive campaign of filing every conceivable motion (and some inconceivable) to disguise the true issue in these pretrial proceedings. Apparently viewing litigation as war, plaintiffs by this tactic have had the effect of massively increasing the costs to the other parties, and, for a while, to the Court. The appointment of the Special Master 4 years ago has considerably relieved the burden to this Court. The scope of plaintiff's efforts have to be seen to be believed. (See, Exhibit "A", photo of clerk with filings, and Exhibit "B", copy of clerk's docket with 82 pages and 1,757 filings.)
Yet, it is almost all puffery -- motions without merit or substance.

Most of the prolix memorandum and almost 1,000 pages of accompanying exhibits and supplements have nothing to do with anything at issue in these consolidated cases. Instead, the papers recite every grievance allegedly suffered by Scientology at the hands of others for the past forty years. Plaintiffs have assembled this hodge-podge of grievances into a conspiracy theory, in which each and every grievance is alleged to somehow connect to this litigation. The ultimate aim is to convince the court that the counterclaims were dismissed because conspirators sabotaged this case, not because plaintiffs failed to comply with court-ordered discovery. -- James G. Koltz, U.S. Special Master 23 July 1992

"We thought Scientology was something like Dale Carnegie. I now believe it's a school for psychopaths. Their so-called therapies are manipulations. They take the best and the brightest people and destroy them." - Edward Lottick, father of suicide victim Noah Lottick

"I am Scientology's worst nightmare. I am an intelligent young person who will grow up and lead the thoughtless away from Scientology. I, and my intelligent peers are the greatest enemy of Scientology, and you await our arrival with fear. I don't blame you." -- Harley McGrew
